There are a number of on-screen couples in Bollywood that has amazed us. But then there are couples who were love interests to each other in real life as well. These couples used to share great chemistry on the sets and continued the same even when the cameras stopped. The camaraderie went beyond the scripts and moved on to the real life.
But unfortunately, the recognizable pairs who have played iconic on-screen couples parted ways. Things did not go the right way and they dealt with heartbreaks. Let’s have a look at those tinsel town duos.
It goes without saying that Salman and Ash together have put the screens on fire with their sizzling chemistry. It was a match made in heaven in real life too. They used to look quite inseparable in movies like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. After the movie, the media was abuzz with their love tales and they were known as one of the most loved-couples of B-town. But later their relationship became a messy affair and it was all about abuse, embarrassment and harassment. The fairy tale could not last a lifetime. That Salman has beaten and abused Aishwarya became the subject of discussion and the fodder of newspapers. The relationship was left with nothing but the burning controversies regarding Salman’s violent behaviour. Aishwarya Rai decided to end things before it gets uglier.
One of the most popular celeb pairs whose love story transcended from reel to real life was Salman and Katrina. From Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya to Tiger Zinda Hai, the couple has created magic on-screen with their good looks and talent. The movie couple fell in love and started dating off-screen. But soon there were reports about the couple calling it quits. There were news about the duo picking up quarrels for various reasons. It was difficult for the fans to come to the terms that the couple was no longer together. Later it was also speculated that things started dwindling due to Katrina’s closeness to co-star Ranbir Kapoor while working together in Ajab Prem Ki Gajab Kahani. The couple is still together professionally but onthe personal front they have parted ways. However, their on-screen romance still continues as we could see in Tiger Zinda Hai.
It was during the making of Ajab Prem Ki Gajab Kahani that Ranbir and Katrina developed the passion for one another. They continued dating even after the production and shoot wrapped. After she broke up with Salman Khan, Katrina started going around with Kapoor lad who at that point of time was heard of dating Deepika Padukone. There were rumours that he ditched Deepika for Katrina and became quite open about his relationship with Kat. However, there was a twist in the tale and their break-up rumours started circulating when actress Nargis Fakhri came in Ranbir’s life. Things started turning ugly as Katrina could not stand the betrayal.
There was much noise about the couple going around after working together in Band Baja Baraat. Very soon, Anushka and Ranveer became one of the most favourite Bollywood on-screen as well as off-screen jodis. The young lovebirds hit it off quite well on screen and had great romantic vibes in real life too. From being friends to lovers they had a lovely journey of three years. The enormous love and affection diminished after some time and the couple later took on different paths. However, their impressive saga continued onscreen for their fans.
Having co-starred in Fida and Jab We Met, the couple turned classic as actors as well as lovers. They took their on-the-sets stories to real life and started dating. Later, the couple starred together as lovers in a number of films. There was a time when they just couldn’t live without each other and held the utmost respect for one another. But the real-world relationship could not survive for long due to Kareena’s growing affection and passion to her Tashan co-star Saif Ali Khan. Simultaneously Shahid was also linked to Vidya Balan, who had then shared screen space with him in Kismat Konnection. Kareena and Shahid finally uncoupled and went on to marry Saif Ali Khan and Mira Rajput, respectively.
This was one celebrity break-up that left us shocked and disheartened. After staying together for around nine years and in being in a live-in relationship, they were almost on the verge of tying the knots. But after the blissful togetherness, the evil struck and eventually they grew apart and split. It is said the couple started facing personal issues which led to differences of opinion and rough patches. There were reports that the couple was insecure about their relationship and also John called it quits following Bipasha’s downfall in the movie career. Both the actors today are now staying happily with their respective spouses. Well, regardless of whatever the truth was, we wish this split had never happened.
At one point of time, Aishwarya Rai and Vivek Oberoi made for one of the smartest jodis in B-town. The two fell in love during the making of Kyun! Ho Gya Na… where Aishwarya was a co-star to Vivek Oberoi. But later the two had an ugly break-up as it was reported that Salman Khan went on to say nasty things about the couple. As per news, Salman even threatened the stars with phone calls. Very soon, the news of Ash and Vivek’s break-up made way to the newspaper headlines. Their love, passion and romance were at the peak during the making of Chura Ke Dil Mera from the movie Main Khiladi Tu Anari. Soon, the world of love collapsed and there were betrayal and heartaches. It is said that Shilpa found out that Akshay was cheating on her and was two-timing her for Twinkle Khanna. Shilpa was not someone who would accept all this and soon broke up with him. During one of the interviews, she has said,
“I never imagined that he could two-time me, and that too all along our relationship.” Adding further that she holds no grudges against Twinkle, she said, “No, I'm not at all upset with her. What's her fault if my man was cheating on me? There is no point blaming any other woman, it was entirely his fault.”
The pair was the talk of the town and their romance even gave relationship goals to many. Smart and sassy Sushmita had also openly admitted that the director Vikram Bhatt was planning divorce when she met and fell for him. It was also learnt that Vikram Bhatt was guilty of creating the mess in his own life with another woman. Things never became steady and Sushmita and Vikram eventually parted ways.

The yesteryear actors played the love interest to each other in a couple of movies including the super-hit Mughal-E-Azam. The friendship started growing on the sets and in real life too it was a fairy tale romance between the two. But the couple’s relationship had a sad ending there could not be any ‘happily ever after’. In his autobiography- The Substance And The Shadow, Dilip Kumar himself reveals that Madhubala’s father looked at their relationship from a business angle and wanted him to have another career. This was quite not digestible to the superstar and he turned away.
They have not done one but a series of wonderful movies for Bollywood. In movies like Mr Natwarlal, Ganga Ki Saugandh and Silsila, they were a made for each other couple. The bond on the sets for the legendary actors turned into a serious love affair. News of their relationship status started following the couple everywhere. “Yes, I've cheated, out of immaturity, out of inexperience, out of taking advantage of certain temptations, out of callousness. You realize it now when you grow up, and you value it more. Why be in a relationship, why be committed to someone when you cannot be committed.”
The actors first met when they started working on Student Of The Year. After the movie ended, it was heard that the couple has started dating and hanging around. But as per the actors, there was hardly anything between them. In an earlier interview, Alia also stated that though Siddharth is a nice person to be with, there was no such possibility of having an affair or so.
