She was considered as the most beautiful actress of B-town and he was considered as the most successful playback singer in the Hindi film industry. Love happened between the two and they soon tied the knot, but destiny had something else planned for the two. We are talking about the most stunning couple ever, Kishore Kumar ji and Madhubala.
Everyone feels happy when two beautiful souls unite and live happily ever after. But in their case, their happy marriage was short-lived not because they were out of love but the demand of the situation was such.
To the uninitiated ones, Madhubala ji died a heart-achingly sad death, which of course she didn’t deserve. People and her fans still couldn’t believe that a dreamlike beauty like hers was so early bereft.

In an interview with Filmfare, some time back, sister of this pretty actress, Madhur Bhushan shared the heart-wrenching account of her life. Let’s start off with how love happened between Madhubala and Kishore da. Actually, Kishore ji was a rebound for Madhubala as per her sister. When the late actress was struggling hard to get over Dilip Kumar, with whom she was in a relationship, she got attracted to Kishore sir. Madhur retorted:
“Perhaps, she got attracted to his beautiful voice, his ability to make her laugh.”
Madhur further revealed that their father (Madhubala and Madhur’s abba) was against their marriage because of Madhubala’s ill health. Nonetheless, she went ahead and tied the knot with Kishore in 1960. Madhur recalled:
“Kishore Bhaiyya flew her to London about 10 days later. The doctors said, ‘her heart is finished’. And that she wouldn’t live beyond two years.”
Madhur further narrated the heart-breaking story and said:
“Soon after that Kishore Bhaiyya left her at our home. He said that she was sick and needed care while he had to travel, work, sing and hence wouldn’t be able to give her time.”
"He said, ‘I tried my best, I took her to London. But the doctors have said she won’t survive. What’s my fault?’”
All Madhu then at that crucial stage needed was her husband's support and love. Madhur continued:
“We’re not saying that he was wrong. Aapa was told by the doctors ‘you cannot have sex, you cannot have children’… But yet a woman needs emotional support no matter what. Aapa insisted that she wanted to be with him. So he bought a flat at Quarter Deck, Carter Road where they stayed for a while. But she’d be alone most of the time. The sea breeze made her sicker.”
Because of this, she was left with one option and that was to move to her paternal house, which further resulted in missing her husband even more. Remembering those times, Madhur recalled:
“Often Kishore Bhaiyya’s phone was disconnected. He’d visit her once in two to three months. He’d say, ‘If I come, you’ll cry and it will not be good for your heart. You’ll go into depression. You should rest'. She was young, jealousy was natural. Perhaps, a feeling of being abandoned killed her."
As it is said that willpower can do anything, just like it did for Madhubala ji too. She was supposed to live for over 2 years, but survived for nine long years. Madhur further shared:
“But she had tremendous willpower. She was supposed to live for two years. She went on to live for nine. She’d say I don’t want to die. I’ll get operated and cured someday.”
She further retorted:
“He was flying to Kolkata for a show. He feared the organisers would lose money. But Abba said, ‘You’ll never see her again.’”
Well, no doubt, we lost a gem of a person when Madhubala ji passed away and the void that prevails in the industry is still the same. We miss her so much!
