Once in a while, right in the middle of an ordinary life, we meet someone, who touches our soul and become an important part of our story. However, the sad reality of love is that it fades away and there are times when you end a relationship for lack of understanding and a lot of fights. But ending a relationship doesn't always mean that you cannot stay in touch with your exes.
Ex-couples mostly go through one major dilemma- to stay friends or not? The situation is similar in the starry world of Bollywood. However, nowadays, ex-couples aren't only setting friendship goals but also proving that they can be a good team. So, take a look at some celebs who have managed to remain good friends even after their break-up.
Whoever is a die-hard fan of Bigg Boss knows about 'GauShal Love Saga'. Gauahar Khan and Kushal Tandon fell in love inside the Bigg Boss house and remained in love for quite a few months after the show got over. After dating for a few months, this ex-couple called it quits. They had an ugly breakup in the public and even went on to say nasty things about each other. But later, Kushal shared a stunning cover shoot picture of Gauahar on his Instagram handle, praising her beauty. He wrote:
"Saw this picture ... click by my brother Haider khan ..... could not risisset my self to share this picture of this stunner .... @gauaharkhan lady with grace , panache, ooomp and style with a golden heart."
To this lovely gesture, Gauahar replied:
"Arrrrrre waah!!!!!! I'm touched!!!! thank you so much!!"
While Kushal Tandon is still finding his soulmate, Gauahar Khan had tied the knot with the love of her life, Zaid Darbar.
After ending their five-year-long relationship, Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan maintained a distance from each other for almost seven years. However, they came face-to-face during IIFA 2014, when Kareena came to the stage to give an award, and Shahid was co-hosting the show with Farhan Akhtar. And, Kareena took everyone, including Shahid, by surprise as she said, ‘Hello Shahid’. While the two were even seen in the movie, Udta Punjab, they did not share even a single frame in it. However, in one of his interviews with the Times of India, Shahid told that he was the one to suggest her name for the movie.
“I was the first to suggest that Kareena was perfect for this role. I respect her as an actress. I'm happy she is living a good life. So am I.”
And, now that Shahid has also married a Delhi-based girl, Mira Rajput, Kareena revealed another secret that shows all is well between these two. As the actor took quite some time to announce his marriage plans in media, the actress revealed that Shahid told her about it before telling it to the entire world.
“Both of us were performing at a Femina event. We chatted. So, he actually told me about him getting married before he told the media. I’m very happy for him. He’s doing very well professionally… I haven’t seen Haider yet, but my sister saw it and loved it. And I can vouch for marriage being cool. I’d just like to wish him well.”
Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma started dating each other after their first film together, Band Baaja Baaraat. However, their relationship did not last long and they parted ways. In fact, they even stopped being in touch with each other. But, they did make a comeback in the reel life as they did Zoya Akhtar’s Dil Dhadakne Do. Their comfort level in the film certainly proved that there is no awkwardness between the two. However, prior to the release of Dil Dhadakne Do, Ranveer opened up about Anushka in one of his interviews to a leading daily:
“I have great affection for her brother and her parents and she will always be a special person for me. It was great to reunite with her. I am really really happy with all the success she has been seeing lately and I am her genuine well-wisher.”
Even Anushka has been quoted by a tabloid saying:
“We didn’t have a conversation before shooting. In fact, we met three days before shooting on the ship. We met after a long time and it was like meeting an old friend. He is the same person. The thing is I’m very fond of Ranveer. And I know he’s genuinely fond of me. He has been my friend. We both had that success together. It was a special bond that will remain.”
Although no one knows why or when Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif actually parted ways after a five-year-long relationship, all we know is that they are still friends. In one of her interviews, Katrina said:
“Personally do I think Salman’s advice has been important (for me)? Yes, I think it’s been invaluable. Having Salman and his circle to give me advice was definitely very useful and very important.”
Post-break-up, Salman and Katrina have been seen together sharing sizzling chemistry in Ek Tha Tiger (2012), for which they made several appearances together. Katrina is still quite close to the entire 'Khan-clan'. She is often seen partying with Salman’s family. Not only this, she even attended almost all the functions of Salman's sister, Arpita Khan's wedding, in 2014. So, clearly, there is no sign of animosity between these two.
Sangeeta Bijlani is believed to be Salman’s first love. They were thought to be pretty serious about each other, but their love-life did not last long. Sangeeta moved on to marry the former Indian cricket captain, Mohd. Azharuddin. Even though their romantic liaison could not stand the test of time, yet their friendship remains quite strong. Salman came out openly to support Sangeeta when her marriage hit a rocky patch. Sangeeta has also been seen bonding with Salman’s family, especially his sisters– Arpita and Alvira.
Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone did indulge in some mud-slinging after they split, but today the equation has changed for the better. In one of Ranbir's interviews, while talking about his relationship status with Deepika, the actor said:
“Deepika and I will remain friends for a very long time. I will be her children's godfather; I will play with them and all of that. We have that kind of relationship."
Deepika also agrees that they have moved on (from their rift) and are in an amazing phase, which is even better than when they were in a relationship.
The two certainly share a sizzling on-screen chemistry, which is quite evident in the movies they have worked together. The two had met on the sets of Bachna Ae Haseeno and fell head-over-heels in love, but split within a year. They were once again paired opposite each other in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (YJHD). While talking about YJHD, Deepika was quoted saying:
“When I agreed to do the film I had not read the script, but I had faith on Ayan (Mukerji) and working with Ranbir was the other reason why I said ‘yes’ to the film.”
The two worked together again in Imtiaz Ali's movie, Tamasha. Ranbir and Deepika also walked on the ramp together for designer Manish Malhotra at a charity fashion show. Deepika shared a picture from the event on her Instagram and captioned it:
"jab naina met bunny..."
Currently, Ranbir Kapoor is in relationship with Alia Bhatt. On the other hand, Deepika Padukone is living her 'happily ever after' with Ranveer Singh.
The relationship between Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra has always confused their fans. It is said that they fell in love while shooting for their film, Kaminey. Soon, the couple headed in different directions. Even after the break-up, Shahid and Priyanka have always been cordial and friendly with each other. According to the recent reports, Shahid was one of the first actors to reach Priyanka’s residence, when her father passed away. Post break-up, the two starred in Teri Meri Kahaani, and this is what their director Kunal Kohli had to say, about them:
“There were many stories about how Shahid and Priyanka didn't talk to each other on the sets because of personal issues as they had just broken up, but this kind of chemistry wouldn't show on screen if they were not talking to each other. There's even a scene where we have PC and Shahid trading shayari with each other. You have to see it to believe the chemistry!" Well, it clearly shows that it is possible to be friends with your ‘ex’, especially if you are working together.
For the unversed, Priyanka Chopra had tied the knot with the love of her life, Nick Jonas in 2018, and is settled in New York.
The chemistry between Shilpa Shetty and Akshay Kumar reached new heights after the two of them worked together in Main Khiladi Tu Anari. But, Akshay cheated on Shilpa and this left her devastated. In an interview after the release of her movie Dhadkan (opposite Akshay Kumar), she went on to rebuke Akshay publically.
“Akshay Kumar used me and conveniently dropped me after he found someone else. The only person, I was upset with was him. But I'm sure he'll get it all back.”
After so much animosity, no one thought there could be any reconciliation between these two. However, it seems that after finding love in Raj Kundra, Shilpa has left the past behind. Akshay made a guest appearance on a television show that was being judged by Shilpa Shetty, and both seemed at ease in each other's company. When the lovers-turned-foes turned back towards friendship, this is what Shilpa had to say:
“I share a cordial friendship with Akshay Kumar now, and I’d like it to remain that way. There’s no animosity between us.”
Bipasha Basu and Dino Morea were a couple way back in the '90s. The two were seen together in a racy lingerie advertisement and acted in the hit film, Raaz in 2002. The same year, the two called it quits and moved on. However, a few years later they re-ignited their relationship and are known to be quite pally to date. Recently, Bipasha Basu even came in full support for Dino Morea’s fitness brand.
Dino Morea attended Bipasha and Karan's wedding reception on 30th April, 2016. Bipasha's ex-beau, Dino Morea was looking dashing in a black suit and also posed with Bipasha and Karan. While talking about Bips and their equation, Dino shared:
"Bipasha is a fantastic human being. She has always been there for me and even I have always been there for her. I share a very great relationship with her.”
Even though the two have been in a relationship with other people, yet their friendship remains undaunted. They make it seem quite easy and seamless for couples to tread the ‘ex-lover-still-friends’ path.
Akshay Kumar is counted amongst one of those actors from the B-town who has always been linked up with his co-stars. One of such link-up was with Pooja Batra. Khiladi Kumar gave everyone a pleasant surprise when he made a special appearance at alleged ex-girlfriend Pooja Batra’s movie screening named, Mirror Games. The couple were rumoured to be dating each other late back in the 90s. It seems that the lovebirds have moved on in life and are still friends with each other.
The power couple and childhood sweethearts left everyone teary-eyed with the announcement of their divorce. Hrithik Roshan and Sussanne Khan ended their 17-year long relationship (which includes four years of their courtship) in 2014. Though everything between them went bitterly downhill, post- their divorce, some adorable moments of them have proved otherwise. From their vacations with their kids, Hrehaan and Hridhaan to wishing each other on birthdays and having each other’s back, Hrithik and Sussanne being ex-life partners share a cordial relationship.
Another power couple, who ended their 18-year-marriage in 2016 is B-town’s Chaiyya Chaiyya girl, Malaika Arora Khan and her director-actor husband, Arbaaz Khan. After 5 years of their steady relationship, lovebirds Malaika and Arbaaz had taken wedding vows in front of their friends and family in a church on December 12, 1998. And it was followed by a nikah in the evening, and a lavish reception at night. After their divorce, Malaika had dropped 'Khan' from her surname. However, she shared a cordial relationship with her ex-husband. Speaking to Mid-Day about her relationship with Arbaaz post-divorce, Malaika stated:
"Arbaaz is a part of my family, the father of my child. Certain equations don't change overnight. The things that happened should remain between us. It's personal. We don't have to prove anything to anybody. Meeting (Arbaaz Khan) makes my son happy, and that makes me happy."
She further added:
"For Amrita, he's like a brother, and he is a son to my parents. What happened is between us. Arbaaz and I have known each other all our lives. It was emotionally difficult, but we haven't really talked about it because we are private individuals. He is very important to me. No matter what happens or where life takes us, Arbaaz will always be integral to my life "
MTV Roadies and MTV Splitsvilla fame and youth icon, Raghu Ram amicably ended his 10-years-of-marriage with Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na actress, Sugandha Garg. Raghu and Sugandha are setting some major #DivorceGoals with the amazing bond that they share with each other even after the separation. Raghu found love in an Italian-Canadian singer, Natalie Di Luccio and his ex-wife was the first one to know about it. Announcing their divorce, Raghu posted an inspiring caption which could be read as:
“Some things never change. Like the love I have for you. Like the fun, we have always had together. Nothing ends. It changes and the next phase begins #FriendshipGoals #DivorceGoals”.
A close friend of Raghu and Sugandha talked about the ex-lover’s relationship and said:
“Raghu and Sugandha are wonderful people, they have decided to uncouple but they deeply care about each other. They respect each other’s decision and still hang out together. In fact, we all hang out together and there is no awkwardness or bad feeling at all. They are close friends and will continue to be so for the rest of their lives. Both of them have been able to spend lesser and lesser time with each other over the last few years and that has probably changed the equation between them.”
April 24, 2017, is the day when Farhan Akhtar and Adhuna Bhabani shocked everyone with the news of them calling quits in their marriage. There was no hint of any turmoil in their relationship, but they amicably ended their 16 years of marriage. They issued a joint statement which could be read as:
"This is to announce that we, Adhuna and Farhan, have mutually and amicably decided to separate. Our children remain our priority and it is immensely important to us, as responsible parents, that they be protected from unwarranted speculation and public glare. We sincerely request that we are given the privacy that is required at this time to move forward in a dignified manner."
Adhuna even found love again in actor Dino Morea’s brother, Nicole Morea. And when Adhuna took her Instagram to share a picture of herself with Nicole’s friends, her ex-husband commented on that picture. This just shows that friendship is possible even after divorce. After dating for more than 2 years, Anurag Kashyap and Kalki Koechlin tied the knot in 2011. However, after two years of marital bliss, the rumours started floating in that lovebirds have some turbulence in their marital life and finally, in 2015, they got divorced. In 2015, confirming their divorce, they issued a joint statement which could be read as:
“Me and Kalki are separating, we are taking time off from each other to figure things out. We are not divorcing. We request the media to please respect our privacy and give us our space and not speculate. Thank you, Kalki and Anurag.”
Since their divorce, Anurag and Kalki are often spotted together and they both share a cordial bond. Even if separated, the genuine camaraderie, friendliness, love and respect between them make them a perfect example that exes can be friends too. Sharing his feelings for Kalki, Anurag once stated in an interview:
“Yes, we’re in touch. We are still good friends. I’m very happy for her. A lot of people did not give the credit that was due to her. They said she was getting everything because of Anurag. But you can’t live your life by what people say. People have no other business except passing comments on others.”
For those who don't know, Kalki is now a mommy of one-year-old baby girl, Sappho. She is co-parenting with her beau, Guy Hershberg.
Yeh Saali Zindagi fame actress Aditi Rao Hydari is working predominantly in Hindi and Tamil language films. She was highly revered for the portrayal of Rani Mehrunisa in the money-spinner Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period drama, Padmaavat. Aditi was married to actor, Satyadeep Mishra, who made his Bollywood debut in No One Killed Jessica (2012) and was last seen in the Indian political thriller television finite series, P.O.W. - Bandi Yuddh Ke. Aditi tied the nuptial knot with Satyadeep in the year 2007 when she only 21, but the couple headed for divorce in 2013. Talking about her marriage, Aditi was quoted as saying:
“Yes, I got married at 21 to Satyadeep, who was a civil servant and lawyer and gave it up to become an actor. He is a natural actor and is in fact playing the second lead with Emraan Hashmi in Danis Tanovic's next. I met him when I was 17 and that was my only serious relationship”.
She further revealed that they are still friends and only the name of their relationship had collapsed:
“It broke my heart when we separated, but only the name of the relationship collapsed as we are friends and are still close. For his mother, I am a daughter and for my mother, he will always remain a son. He is much older to me and always teases me about being his child who he cannot get rid of. Coincidentally, Murder 3 was about a girl picking up her life that I could relate to with my own life”.
About the camaraderie that the ex-couple shares, Bombay Velvet actor said:
“I don’t normally talk about Aditi, and neither does she talk about me. We may live separately but she is still the closest friend I have.”
