While some of these moments are filmi, some seem straight out of a romantic novel! Read on to know how our favourite celebrities proposed their better halves!
The bold and beautiful Malaika Arora did not waste a minute when she knew she had found her Mr Right. She met Arbaaz Khan while filming a coffee commercial with him. After five years of dating, on one New Year's night, in a cosy moment, Malaika just turned to Arbaaz and asked:
“I think we should move this to the next level. Would you want to go down that road with me?”
Then Arbaaz looked at her and said:
“Choose the time and place!”
And that sealed the moment. The couple tied the knot in 1998, and they have a son named Arhaan Khan. However, they got legally divorced in 2017.
Childhood sweethearts, Fardeen Khan and Natasha Madhvani, had known each other forever! So, after years of dating, when Fardeen thought it was time to make it official, he chose a unique way to do it. He popped the question mid-air in a Trans-Atlantic flight. The couple was flying together from London to the US when Fardeen candidly proposed to Natasha. Well, how could she refuse?
They got married in 2005 and are proud parents of a daughter, Diani Isabelle Khan and a son, Azarius Fardeen Khan.
Gauri was just a teenager when she started dating Shah Rukh. But when he got too possessive about her, she broke off with him for some time to take a break. After a birthday party, she left for Mumbai with her friends without informing him. Shah Rukh later frantically looked for her in Mumbai. Finally, he found her on the beach, where both broke down in tears on realising how much they had missed each other.
A tearful and highly emotional proposal is what followed, which of course was accepted by Gauri. The couple has been married since 1991 with three kids, Aryan Khan, Suhana Khan and AbRam Khan.
The junior Bachchan got attracted to Miss Rai when they were shooting for Kuch Naa Kaho. The couple admitted to actually realising their love for each other on the sets of Guru. Abhishek confessed that while filming in New York, he used to stand in the balcony of his hotel room and wished:
“One day, wouldn't it be nice if I was together with her, married!”
When the couple was in New York for the premiere of Guru, he took her to the same balcony and asked:
“Will you marry me?”
They got married the next year, in 2007. The couple now have a lovely daughter named Aradhaya Bachchan!
Hrithik has often talked about having a huge crush on Sussanne, since he was 12 years old. However, he realised that she was the one he wanted to spend his life with when he saw her at a traffic signal, just like in the scene from his first film Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai. The couple started dating and a few years later, Hrithik proposed by slipping a beautiful ring into the mug of coffee which Sussanne was drinking. This good-looking couple got married in 2000. Hrithik and Sussanne are divorced now and have two sons named Hridhan and Hrihaan.
Though this couple prefer to keep their personal life away from the media glare, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor never shied away from admitting their relationship with each other from their fans. Before dating each other, Saif was married to Amrita Singh and Kareena was in a serious relationship with Shahid Kapoor. Nawab of Pataudi fell in love with Bebo while working together in a YRF banner film, Tashan but his proposal was rejected 2 times before she finally said “Yes!”. On a television chat show, Kareena talked about the proposal and stated:
"He actually proposed to me a couple of months after we met, in Paris. In fact, his father (late cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi) had also proposed to Sharmila Tagore in Paris when she was shooting for the movie 'An Evening in Paris'.
She further added:
I think it was at the bar of Ritz Hotel that he proposed, and I said no. During the same trip, he asked again when we were at the Notre Dame Church. I was just like 'Let's not talk about it'. Because I was into my career and I asked him for some time to think about my decision. And well, two days later I said yes."
One year after their relationship, Saif tattooed Kareena’s name on his arm to mark his love for her. Speaking about the same, Saif recalled:
“We were in the car one afternoon in Bandra, talking about David Beckham. I don’t know why I brought him up. And then the tattoo came up, and I said, ‘Maybe I should get one on my shoulder, would it look cool?’ And Kareena said, ‘Why shoulder? Put it on your arm.’ I thought, ‘Maybe a nice K?’ and she said, ‘That’s a bit ambiguous.’”
And on, October 16, 2012, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan sealed the deal with a week-long celebration. They are now parents to a super-adorable munchkin, Taimur Ali Khan.
Continuing the family legacy, Soha Ali Khan was also proposed by the love of her life, Kunal Kemmu in Paris. With Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi proposing Sharmila Tagore when she was shooting for the movie 'An Evening in Paris' and Saif Ali Khan proposing Kareena Kapoor at Notre-Dame de Paris, seems like the Pataudi clan has a special attachment to Paris. Soha and Kunal were on a month-long vacation in Europe, when the latter decided to propose his lady-love at the most romantic city in the world.
Even though Paris was not their itinerary, Kunal made sure to pull off a perfect proposal for Soha, and of course, she happily agreed. In 2014, elated Soha shared the news with her fans on Twitter, and tweeted:
"It gives me great happiness to share with you all that Kunal proposed to me in Paris with the most perfect ring in the world and I said yes."
While working with each other on the sets of their film, Alone, their steaming hot on-screen chemistry transformed to off-screen ‘monkey love’. They fell in love and ever since then, there has been no looking back for the much-in-love couple. Be it their age gap or the fact that Karan earlier had two failed marriages, nothing stopped them from falling in love. Karan described his proposal in an interview:
"We were in Koh Samui, it was 31 December and the sky was lit with fireworks. I was carrying the ring with me and something told me that this is the right time. So while she was capturing the fireworks on video, I took the opportunity and gave her the ring. And guess what? Her expression was like that of someone who was going to be murdered, like in some of her films.”
Her reaction was unexpected and hilarious. Karan mentioned what was her reply to his proposal and said:
“Just imagine... I am on my knees for 10 minutes and between sobs, she tells me, "What's wrong with you, why do you want to marry me? I am not supposed to get married!" Finally, she said "Okay". To me it sounded like a yes, so I said I will take that."
Karan Singh Grover and Bipasha Basu were pronounced man and wife on April 30, 2016, and even after 2 years of marital bliss, lovebirds are enjoying that sweet honeymoon phase!
While Akshay debut into Bollywood with a minor role Mahesh Bhatt’s film, Aaj, in 1987 but despite his fair share of hits and flops, Akshay was indeed here to stay. On the other hand, Twinkle belonged from a family of superstars. She is the daughter of the ‘First Superstar of Indian Cinema’, Rajesh Khanna and timeless beauty, Dimple Kapadia. Akshay and Twinkle’s first encounter was during a shoot for Filmfare magazine in Mumbai, where the former developed ‘love at first sight’ for the latter.
On Karan Johar’s chat show, Koffee with Karan, Akshay Kumar found out a little more than he wished about the roots of his relationship. When Karan stated that their relationship started off as a fling, Akshay said:
“It didn’t start as a fling.”
To which, Twinkle instantly replied:
“Oh, it did!”
Twinkle was out a serious relationship back then, so she just wanted a 15 days fling with Akshay but eventually got married to him and they have now completed 17 years of blissful marriage.
Sharing an incident about from dating period, Twinkle revealed:
“While we were dating, for one of my birthdays, he gave me a crystal paperweight. I told him, “one day you’ll buy me a diamond as big as this bloody paperweight”. So, I made sure.”
Bollywood khiladi Akshay Kumar revealed how Twinkle said ‘Yes’:
"Twinkle was very confident of her upcoming release, Mela, in 2000. She was certain that it would do well and told me that in case the movie fails to create magic at the box office, she would marry me.’’
Fortunately for him, Mela did flop and the rest is history! Akshay and Twinkle got married on January 7, 2001 and are now proud parents of two children, Aarav and Nitara.
