Add BollywoodShaadis on GoogleNBC Studios had a troubled start to the day on Thursday, July 16, 2026. While the filming of the Today show was going on, it was shockingly interrupted by an intruder, now identified as Andrew Truelove. The suspect stormed into the network's studios at New York City's Rockefeller Plaza, allegedly looking for Al Roker.
Instead, the intruder lunged at co-host Craig Melvin while hurling racist slurs. The shocking incident has now put Truelove in the spotlight, with authorities filing multiple hate crime charges against him.
According to the New York Police Department, the 41-year-old is facing charges of hate crime burglary, hate crime menacing, hate crime criminal trespass, and harassment. He has not yet been arraigned.
Authorities and insiders allege that Truelove entered NBC's studio through an unauthorized area shortly before 9 a.m. EDT on July 16 for "a disorderly person inside 30 Rockefeller Center." Law enforcement sources told PEOPLE that the intruder initially asked staff members for longtime weather anchor Al Roker before allegedly confronting Craig Melvin inside a restricted section of the building.
Melvin reportedly alerted security immediately, who detained the suspect until police arrived. No physical altercation occurred, and no injuries were reported. The incident has sparked major security concerns at the NBC studios, especially in light of the ongoing tensions surrounding Today co-host Savannah Guthrie’s missing mother, Nancy Guthrie.
Following the incident, NBC News confirmed that an unauthorized individual entered an area near Studio 1A before approaching Melvin. "There was no altercation, and no one was injured," the network said in a statement, adding that it is fully cooperating with investigators while reviewing its security procedures.
Craig Melvin also reassured viewers on social media later in the day. "I've heard from so many of you over the last few hours. I'm doing just fine. Thanks for reaching out. I'm looking forward to seeing you tomorrow morning on @todayshow," he wrote.
Previous reports by The Los Angeles Times and Boston Herald revealed that Truelove is originally from Virginia but spent time living on the streets of Southern California before drifting to New York City, where he has recently been living at a homeless shelter in the Bowery neighborhood of Chinatown.
Law enforcement sources reported that Truelove suffers from PTSD and a related mood disorder. Statements made during his arrest led police to formally classify him as emotionally disturbed.
Court records show this is not Truelove's first encounter with law enforcement. The report says the 41-year-old was homeless at one point and in June 2026 pleaded guilty to felony criminal mischief for damaging several vehicles. He was sentenced to six months in jail, five years of probation, and ordered to pay USD 375 in fines. It remains unclear how much of that sentence he served.
Truelove also reportedly has three pending criminal cases in New York, where he has pleaded not guilty to charges including assault, reckless endangerment, criminal trespass on railroad property, and trespassing. Truelove has been cycling through the criminal justice system for years and reportedly has eight unsealed arrests in New York City alone.
The alarming breach has sparked fresh questions about security at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. According to TMZ, staff members were left shaken after the suspect allegedly gained access through a stairwell and reached backstage areas before being stopped.
An insider told Page Six that when celebrities come to the studio for interviews, they arrive with a large group of people, which makes it difficult for security to monitor everyone. Talking about the reason behind bad security, the insider stated:
"30 Rockefeller Center is a difficult place for security because it’s … really public. ... all the celebrities have like 12 people with them, so it’s not unusual for a whole group of people to be going through security at once. I don’t think it’s like they don’t care. It’s just a complicated place to do security. I imagine there will be meetings today though."
Reports later claimed that NBC terminated a security guard following an internal review into how Truelove managed to enter a restricted section of the building. NBC, however, has not publicly confirmed the dismissal.
The investigation into the security breach incident is underway, and NBC has yet to release additional updates.
