And after a glorious journey in football, Lionel Messi announced his retirement from international football on August 31, 2026. The pain of leaving his favourite game at the age of 39 was clearly visible in his emotional retirement post.

Lionel Messi's wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, has always stood with him in times of immense happiness, lifting trophies and when he failed to leave a mark. As Lionel announced his retirement, Antonela re-shared the post, but she wrote nothing on top of it. And her silence showed that she is also dealing with the same pain as her husband Lionel, after he announced his retirement from his favourite sport.
Lionel Messi captained Argentina to World Cup victory in 2022. The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner shared the retirement announcement on his Instagram. He wrote that it was a decision that left him deeply hurt, but he understands that it is his time to retire. He wrote:
"It was a decision that hurt -- and still hurts deep down -- but I understand that the time has come. I swear to you that I always gave it my all -- not just in these last few years when we won everything, but before that too; I always fought and left everything on the field for this jersey, to bring you joy and make you feel proud to be Argentine through football."
Lionel shared that this chapter hurts him the most. He shared that he always loved and keeps loving being part of the national football team, and he has given his everything to the sport, and with nothing left ot give. He also shared that there are some great young players coming up who deserves to be in the team. He wrote:
"Time is running short, chapters come to a close, and this is one that hurts me deeply. I love, have loved, and will always love being part of the national team. I've given everything I had; I have nothing left to give, and besides, there are some great young players coming up who deserve to be here."
It is worth mentioning that Lionel Messi wanted to leave his fans with a glorious farewell, but his place of being 'the greatest of all' could not be shaken. His wife, Antonela, penned a heartfelt note for him after the defeat. She stated that he has always been the best. She wrote:
"You will always be the best, @leomessi. Not only because of your talent, but because you never stopped being yourself. No matter what happens, you never give up. You always fight until the very end and give everything you have until the last second. That strength, that mentality, and the way you pick yourself up time and time again are what make you truly unique."
It is worth adding that Lionel Messi has been deeply affected by his father's death. And it was the reason why he wanted to retire from his favourite sport. For him, it was never an easy call, and he was hurt while making this tough decision. The death of his beloved father made him understand that he needed to step away from football.
