Why did John Galliano withdraw from the Met Gala 2027?
According to the initial announcement, John Galliano's career was supposed to be celebrated in Met Gala 2027. It was reportedly titled John Galliano: Horizons. However, when the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute announced the move, it immediately sparked criticism. Several industry insiders, internet users, and people from various groups questioned whether he should be honored at the high-profile cultural event.

John, in his statement, admitted that his past actions had caused pain to many. So he understood that an exhibition based on his work would hurt some people again. Although it has been years since he was involved in the controversy, he acknowledged that accountability is an ongoing responsibility.
Some critics argued that honoring John at one of the fashion industry's biggest events was a chance to reduce the impact of his past actions. Therefore, after increasing pressure, John eventually decided to step away from the project. In his words:
"I remain fully accountable for the pain caused by my words in the past, particularly the hurt I caused to the Jewish and Asian communities, and I remain deeply sorry. I understand that meaningful atonement is not achieved through an exhibition, institutional recognition, or a single public gesture. It is a continuing responsibility, demonstrated through listening, learning, and one's conduct over time."
What did John Galliano do in his past?
For those who do not know, the backlash against the Met Gala 2027 dates back to a 2011 incident that changed John's career. It started after some videos surfaced on the internet where he made some antisemitic and racist comments during a fight at a Paris Cafe.
In turn, he was heavily criticized both online and within the fashion industry. John was also removed from Dior, one of the fashion industry's most prestigious houses. Eventually, he was found guilty in France over the comments.
John has frequently apologized for his actions. In fact, he even got treatment for alcoholism and addiction. Yet, his actions still impact his career. Now, it has been more than 15 years to the incident and John has tried to rebuild his career. Still, the exhibition was called out after announcing his name. They received more criticism after it was scheduled to coincide with the Jewish Holocaust Remembrance Day, making it more sensitive.

After John Galliano announced that he had withdrew from the Met Gala 2027, it got mixed reactions from the industry. Many popular personalities like Anna Wintour, praised his decision. She also called his decision, a courageous move. At the same time, the Costume Institute's curator, Andrew Bolton, also supported his decision.
