Princess Diana continues to be the most loved member of the British royal family, even after 29 years of her death. Even though she passed away at an early age, she left a lasting impact through her kindness, charity work and heartwarming personality. It is worth noting that her legacy continues to live through her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry.

Today, on her 65th birth anniversary, all the attention has shifted to her jewellery and what might have happened to it after her unexpected death. For the unversed, Princess Diana died in a car crash in 1997. Coming to her jewellery, it included her sapphire engagement ring, pearl necklaces, Trinity ring and more.

Princess Diana’s lavish jewellery collection

Princess Diana owned one of the finest collections of jewellery. Even though she bought multiple pieces herself, quite a few were also gifted by the British royal family, leaders and her friends. If reports are to be believed, her collection included the much-loved sapphire and diamond engagement ring, the Spencer Tiara, which she wore on her wedding day and her 18th birthday pearl choker.

Apart from this, she also owned an aquamarine ring that she wore after her divorce, diamond necklaces, butterfly earrings, gold necklaces with the letter "D", pearl revenge choker and more. It is worth noting that, despite owning multiple jewels, Princess Diana often borrowed jewellery pieces from her friends. As per reports, she was last seen wearing a 'swan lake' necklace; however, it was borrowed. Her collection also included multiple watches.

Who inherited Princess Diana’s jewellery after her death?

If reports are to be believed, Princess Diana, days before her untimely death, wrote a letter, in which she shared details about her jewellery and what might happen to it after her demise. As per her letter, Princess Diana ‘s jewellery had to be divided among her sons. Her letter can be read as:

"I would like you to allocate all my jewelry to the share to be held by my sons, so that their wives may, in due course, have it or use it. I leave the exact division of the jewelry to your discretion."

Later, Princess Diana's son, Prince Harry spoke about his mother's jewellery in his memoir, Spare. He had shared that before he left for his military deployment, he didn't feel attached to anything except a few things that were given by his mother. He explained:

"I could honestly say that nothing I needed or wanted in life had been left behind, other than a few pieces of Mummy’s jewelry, and the lock of her hair in the little blue box, and the silver-framed photo of her that used to sit on my desk at Eton, all of which I’d stashed in a safe place."

While most of Princess Diana's jewellery was passed on to her sons and their wives, others were sold at auctions. The Attallah Cross, which was owned by her friend, was sold at around USD 197,453. It was bought by reality TV personality, Kim Kardashian. Another piece was the Swan Lake necklace, which was reportedly sold at USD 12 million. Lastly, in 2017, the silver 'D' pendant was sold at USD 8,000.

Today, a few of Princess Diana's pieces are owned by her sons and their wives. Reportedly, in 2010, her engagement ring was given to Kate Middleton as her own ring. Later, two of Princess Diana's diamonds were used to create Meghan Markle's engagement ring. The Spencer Tiara, she wore on her wedding day, was given to her brother, Charles Spencer, 9th Earl Spencer. Other tiaras were returned to the royal family. Apart from this, Princess Diana’s partner, Dodi Fayed bought a Repossi engagement ring; however, he was never able to give it to her. Eventually, it was displayed at Harrods.
