Angelina Jolie feels that she may not have the luxury of time. In an interview with Variety, the actress shared how her approach to motherhood changed in ways her fans have found shocking. Angelina had stated that her mom, Marcheline Bertrand, had passed away because of ovarian and breast cancer at 56. Jolie herself could never meet her grandmother.
It has left a generational mark, and Angelina revealed that she carries a mutated BRCA1 gene. It is a genetic variation where the risk of a woman having breast and ovarian cancer increases. Angelina, in 2013, had to undergo a preventive double mastectomy. For this reason, she reportedly prepared her kids for her death. In her words:
"I raised my kids almost preparing them for my absence and not as much preparing them to be a grandmother. That’s what happens when you consider death as a reality.”
A person does not know when he or she will die. However, Angelina is not someone who puts her life's dependency on fate. This is because Jolie, in an interview with The New York Times, stated that she had to remove her breasts because of her mutated BRCA1 gene. Speaking of her mom's demise, Angelina had shared:
"She held out long enough to meet the first of her grandchildren and to hold them in her arms, but my other children will never have the chance to know her and experience how loving and gracious she was.”

Angelina decided to make sure the kids knew that death is the ultimate reality of life. They need to know that there will be a world without their mom too. It was not a pessimistic thought, as Angelina shared:
"Never lived feeling like I’m going to have a long life. It’s very sobering to realize like the [doctor] says in the film, we’re all going to die; we’re all not here forever. I think having lost my mom young and never met my grandmother, I have never lived feeling like I’m going to have a long life.”
Jolie knows that cancer took away her loved ones from her. Angelina knows that she is at an age where her mom was diagnosed with cancer. A user seeing the strong-headed Angelina preparing her kids for death said, "I love how she has proven everyone wrong and been a wonderful mother to these children. Let’s not forget the absolute filth people (including women) spewed on her, calling her things like 'oh she is just collecting kids for attention' back in the day."
Angelina knows her kids are older now, so she wants them to go out and embrace life. She shared that her children are almost 18 and have seen their mom travel the whole world. Jolie continued, "They want me to get out and do things. They know me more than anybody, and they still like me, which says a lot. I think they’re very encouraging of me kind of getting back to aspects of myself that maybe I hadn’t felt as free to do."
