Add BollywoodShaadis on GoogleDays after Honey Trehan's Satluj was removed from Zee5, the film has been removed from Zee5's international library as well. The movie, based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, premiered on Zee5 on Friday, July 3, 2026 and was released on the OTT platform after four years of censorship delays. However, it was removed in India within 48 hours of its release. Now, the film's removal from the global library has left netizens fuming.
Diljit Dosanjh's Satluj has been one of the most talked-about films in recent times. It follows the story of Jaswant Singh Khalra and his battle against the missing citizens who were allegedly killed by the police post-1984 riots in Punjab. Those who saw the film were left stunned, while those who missed it have been looking for alternatives to see it.
Amid that, the global takedown of Satluj has triggered massive backlash online. Satluj's ban from Zee5 in India had already sparked an intense wave of controversy. Amid that, social media users have further expressed their dismay over the film's removal on platforms like X and Reddit, writing that the movie is no longer available outside India. A user wrote, "So it’s been removed internationally as well."
One Reddit post read, "Satluj has now been removed from Zee5 internationally as well. As the title says, Satluj is no longer available on Zee5 outside of India." Satluj's pirated versions quickly surfaced online following the ban in India, and the film appeared on several platforms including YouTube. A Reddit user's edit read:
"What is so offensive in the movie? It was such a balanced, well-made movie. I would say atrocities were undermined and almost everything was factual. Even clear criminal officers were not called out much, like typical jingoism as we see in propaganda-driven movies that are almost fictional and presented as truth. Satluj/Panjab 95 lays out the facts in the most subtle manner; what a presentation by the director, writer, and actors. It didn't set any narrative; rather, what is already known officially is projected. This movie should be sent to the Oscars, honestly, but I'm amazed how such a sensible movie is banned in India; it's shameful."
Some users noted the unintended consequences of the ban. A comment read, "They’re making it more popular by banning it everywhere. I have non-Punjabi friends who only heard about it after the ban and are watching it as a result." While another wrote, "Just checked yes, it’s not available anymore. The movie is out already; they can’t stop it. People have already been sending it to each other. Someone put it on YouTube. But I feel bad for the sincere effort of the filmmakers; they deserved to earn a dime out of it."
After the removal, ZEE5 issued a formal statement stating that the film was removed from the OTT platform in India on the evening of July 5, 2026. An official spokesperson for co-producer, Ronnie Screwvala's RSVP Movies told SCREEN, "The government has pulled it down," but expressed hope that the film would be back to streaming soon. However, soon after, a government official also made a direct comment on the film.
He stated that the makers released it directly on OTT under a new title without CBFC certification. The official was quoted as saying:
"OTT does not come under the CBFC’s jurisdiction. When the matter came to the government’s notice, Zee was asked to take it (the film) down. The direction was given due to security concerns. The OTT platform was asked to comply with the intermediary guidelines. If they want to release the film in theatres and on OTT, they should follow the laid-down norms."
