Who was Marcy Borders, and how did she survive the North Tower collapse?
Marcy Borders was 28 years old and had started a new job as a legal assistant at Bank of America only a month earlier. Her office was on the 81st floor of the North Tower of the World Trade Center. She was born on July 19, 1973, in Bayonne, New Jersey, and lived just across the bridge from Manhattan.
On September 11, 2001, Marcy was at her desk when the building began to shake and sway. She later recalled that she lost control and went into panic while coworkers tried to calm her. At that moment, no one in the office understood that a hijacked plane had struck about twelve floors above them.
She looked out and saw office furniture and people falling from above. She heard people screaming to stay away from the glass. Borders also saw people who were badly burned and injured. Although her boss told her to stay put, she decided to leave. She said she fought her way out of the building. Marcy made it down the stairwell and reached the street just as the South Tower was coming down.
A stranger grabbed her arm and led her into the lobby of a nearby building. A thick cloud of dust followed her inside. She later described that every time she inhaled, her mouth filled with dust. Marcy revealed that she was choking; she could not see her hand in front of her face, and she kept repeating that she did not want to die.
In that lobby, photographer Stan Honda from Agence France-Presse noticed her. He recalled that a woman walked in completely covered in grey dust; she looked like she was nicely dressed for work, and she stood for a moment in the lobby. He took one photograph of her before a police officer began moving people to a higher level. Borders did not know she had been photographed until her mother saw the image published the next day.

The photograph of Marcy Borders featured her being covered from head to toe in grey dust, her face caked with soot, with only her eyes visible. She was standing in a hazy lobby lit with an eerie glow. It was widely distributed and became one of the most enduring images of September 11, 2001.
Marcy became known worldwide as the Dust Lady. However, it took some time for Marcy to recover. Her daughter said the trauma led to a decade of depression and struggles with drugs and alcohol. Borders said she dealt with anxiety and deep depression. She eventually lost her job and spent long periods in her small apartment in Bayonne.
Marcy Borders tried to rebuild her life, and after several years she recovered from substance abuse. In later interviews, she said she still lived in fear. She said she avoided places like bridges, tunnels, and subway stations because she feared they could be targets.
Thirteen years after the 9/11 attacks, she was diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2014. Marcy was 42 when she died on August 24, 2015, in Paterson, New Jersey. Her family announced her death on social media. Her cousin called her a hero and said she had succumbed to illnesses that her family believed were connected to that fateful day
Notably, Borders believed her illness was connected to the dust she inhaled when the towers collapsed. She said she had been healthy before and questioned whether the dust had triggered cancer cells in her body. Marcy also said she wanted to move from seeing herself as a victim to seeing herself as a survivor.
