Thankfully for those who love Theo James’ acting in the series, The Gentleman has already been renewed for season 3. Now, as we see Theo's transition from “duke to drug baron,” the focus has also shifted to his personal life. For those unaware, Theo James is married to Ruth Kearney.
Meet Theo James’ wife, Ruth Kearney
Theo James' wife, Ruth Kearney, is from Dublin, Ireland. While she rarely talks about her early life, Ruth can often be seen posting about her Irish heritage on Instagram. For instance, sharing a snap of herself with Dublin set as the location, Ruth wrote in the caption, “Happy to be home.”
Professionally, Ruth works as an actress. In a 2017 interview, she admitted that she “can't really imagine” doing anything apart from acting. However, she also noted that this is a tough career. While it can be great fun at times, it can also be really challenging.
Unlike her husband, Theo, who has acted in several hit films like Divergent and shows like The White Lotus Season 2 and The Time Traveller’s Wife, Ruth revealed that she doesn't really care much about making a big name for herself. Instead, she just wants to act in roles that she finds interesting. In her words:
"I'm not in this industry to become famous, I don't go for jobs because they will make me well known, it's so, hopefully, they will lead to more interesting roles… I'm more interested in normal people watching it and their reaction.”
For those unaware, Ruth and Theo James have shared the screen in the first season of Sanditon. Theo played one of the main characters, ‘Sidney Parker,’ in the PBS series inspired by Jane Austen’s novel. Meanwhile, Ruth played a wealthy heiress named ‘Eliza Campion,’ whom Theo’s character ends up getting married to in the season finale.
Acting also played a significant role in Ruth Kearney and Theo meeting each other. Reportedly, Ruth was enrolled at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School when she first crossed paths with her now-husband. In a 2020 interview, Theo said that when their eyes met, both of them “were huddled in leotards pretending to be mice.” He also added, while laughing, “Yeah! Being frogs. We did all the animal shit.”
Speaking of their immediate connection, Theo James gushed about how sanguine, thoughtful, and funny Ruth is and that “it made sense pretty early on.” However, The Gentleman actor also confessed that he wasn't really a nice guy when they met in their mid-20s. He said:
“I think my wife (we met in our mid-20s), if we went back there now, she wouldn't want to hang out with that guy. He did dumb stuff and was stupid and angry. It's so true in a way; you evolve constantly.”
As their relationship progressed, Ruth Kearney and Theo James tied the knot in 2018. The couple first held a small civil ceremony in Islington Town Hall. Later, they held another larger event in Villa Vistarenni located in Tuscany, Italy.
Ruth shares two children with Theo. Their first child, a daughter, was born in August 2021. The couple welcomed a second baby, a boy, in 2023.
