According to an NBC10 Boston investigation published Friday, court records and interviews with family members revealed that the unidentified Plymouth County juror had previously faced a domestic violence charge, along with additional shocking allegations. The juror's identity remains protected because the jury list has been sealed, and he has not spoken publicly about his role in the case.
The lone juror has a domestic violence case and a restraining order from his nephew
The NBC10 Boston investigation revealed that the unnamed juror faced a criminal charge in 2021 following an alleged confrontation with his then-wife. According to a police report, the man's 13-year-old nephew called 911 and alleged that his uncle grabbed his wife by the throat and threw her into a dresser.
The report also mentioned that the juror's mother repeatedly shouted at him during the arrest. While the criminal charge was eventually dismissed, the couple divorced, as per court records. His ex-wife reportedly spoke to the publication and said she didn't want to testify because she feared it could impact the custody of her daughter.
The same nephew later sought a restraining order against the juror in 2025. According to the affidavit cited by NBC10 Boston, the teen alleged that his uncle pushed him to the ground and repeatedly punched him in the face during another confrontation. That restraining order was reportedly active when the juror was selected to hear evidence in Lindsay Clancy's case.
The revelations have prompted debate about the process of jury selection in the Massachusetts court. Michael Coyne, the chief legal analyst at NBC10 Boston, raised questions about the selection process, noting that the standard questionnaire in Massachusetts asks prospective jurors about arrests, criminal charges, and court orders.
Adding to his list of legal troubles, the juror allegedly faces a housing-related court case in connection to months of unpaid rent. Housing court records revealed that the juror had failed to rent at his residence since March 2026, and his landlord reportedly moved forward with his eviction proceedings during the same week that the jurors were struggling to reach a verdict in the Lindsay Clancy case. The court reportedly ruled in the landlord's favor and ordered the juror to pay over USD 12,000 in unpaid rent.
While these allegations do not establish any wrongdoing related to his jury responsibilities, the court records and the restraining order fueled discussions about the holdout's own background in such a sensitive case.
Why did Lindsay Clancy's triple murder case end in a mistrial?
Three jurors from the panel told NBC10 Boston that they spent seven days deliberating Clancy's case, but repeatedly struggled to persuade the lone holdout juror. Foreperson Roni Carlson said that while the lone juror acknowledged having reasonable doubt, he still refused to vote that Clancy should not be held criminally responsible because of insanity. Another juror, Paula Devlin, described him as "arrogant" and said he did not appear to take the other jurors' arguments seriously.
Speaking to ABC's Good Morning America, juror Nick Dargie said that the holdout sometimes refused to engage with the group and was seen scrolling on his phone during deliberations. Dargie also described an incident in which the man allegedly reenacted the strangulation of Clancy's kids using an exercise band and an empty water bottle. This behavior had allegedly left the jury in shock.
After a week's deliberations, when the jurors failed to persuade the holdout, Judge William Sullivan had to declare a mistrial in Lindsay Clancy's case. And now, Clancy's attorney, Kevin Reddington, is seeking a dismissal of the guilty charges.
Lindsay Clancy, a 36-year-old former nurse from Massachusetts, had admitted to the killing of her three children, Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, in their Duxbury residence on January 24, 2023. Her defense argued that a severe case of depression and postpartum psychosis left her unable to understand the wrongfulness of her actions, but prosecutors held her criminally responsible, arguing that she was in her right mind when the murders happened.
Since the mistrial, Lindsay's mother has asked the judge to find her not guilty by reason of insanity rather than order a retrial. A hearing on that request is scheduled for September 29, 2026.
