Million Dollar Nannies, the new Hulu show, has been all the rage since it premiered on the OTT giant. The show follows a number of young and “elite” nannies launching a luxury childcare agency in Ibiza. Among the nannies who have been hogging the spotlight is the male nanny, Jack McCann. Recently, he opened up about the stigma surrounding working in a female-dominated field.

Jack McCann on the realities of working as a male nanny

Jack McCann is a nanny based out of New York City. With time, he has built a massive online following as the self-described “OG Manny.” It is worth noting that he is one of the only two male nannies featured on Million Dollar Nannies. While he had found himself confronting assumptions that still exist around men working in childcare, Jack understood that things in Ibiza were far different from what he had experienced back at home. During a recent interview, Jack stated:

“I've gotten questioned less in my jobs in New York and back home in Virginia. So yeah, I feel like I hadn't really been met with as much scepticism as I was with the families in Ibiza.”

At the age of 23, Jack has already carved out a unique lane for himself in the childcare world. He is known for having popularised the term “N.Y.C Manny” on his TikTok and Instagram, where he has amassed over 150k followers. Many might not be aware, but before becoming a nanny, Jack had considered a more conventional post-college path. He had even received a six-figure offer for a corporate job but ultimately decided to follow his passion for working with children. And this is the same decision which made it possible for him to be featured on Million Dollar Nannies.

During the same interview, Jack McCann also looked back on the experience of working on the Hulu show. He claimed that the clients were all warm and well-intentioned; however, he did admit that sometimes their standards were rather difficult. In his words:

“On the show, they're definitely…very unique. They're lovely people, but they're very particular, and the things they need and their requests are a little bit crazy.”

While demanding employers is something that comes with his job, according to Jack, the thing that he found most surprising was how often his qualifications were questioned in Ibiza. This was especially the case compared to his experiences in New York and Virginia. Still, Jack acknowledged that he also found families who appreciated the perspective that a male can bring, particularly when they work with young boys. Jack McCann explained:

“I think I got really lucky that I landed with a family that has two young boys, because some families do love having a male nanny because, you know, I can go play sports with their kids or I can just be another male role model for them, especially if, like, you know, the father travels a lot for work or anything. So it has its perks.”

Jack McCann reveals how comfortable he feels despite working in a female-dominated environment

Although this field is one where men remain a minority, Jack claimed that he has always felt comfortable working in the environment. Be it working with his fellow nannies in New York City or living alongside the female cast of Million Dollar Nannies, Jack McCann believes that their industry is like a supportive community rather than an intimidating one. He added that he would “rather be surrounded by girls anyway, so it's totally cool being in a female-dominated industry.”
