Christa Pike was set to be executed on September 30, 2026. However, even after two doses of lethal injection, she survived, leading to an even bigger discussion about procedures and who was responsible for what happened. However, reports have now gone rife that the physician who was selected by TDOC had not performed the IV procedure in over a decade, and even botched an execution months before.

Physician appointed to oversee Christa Pike's execution didn't have privileges to insert an IV line, had not done the procedure in over 10 years

According to a 2025 deposition obtained by PEOPLE, Dr. Mark Fowler didn't have hospital privileges or privileges to insert a central IV line at any medical facility. He claimed that the last time he had been allowed to place a central line was in 2013 and that he had not done the procedure since. While he was not allowed to do the procedure, Dr. Fowler claimed that the botched execution was caused by an improperly placed IV.

He claimed that the IV sent the pentobarbital meant to kill Pike to her surrounding tissue rather than into her vein. Another declaration filed by Gail A. Van Norman, M.D., Professor Emeritus of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at the University of Washington, noted that based on Dr. Fowler's deposition:

"He does not have the current experience or training that would be required to obtain or retain privileges to place central lines at many, if not most, major healthcare institutions today."

Christa Pike's execution was supposed to happen on September 30, 2026. However, after two doses, the inmate was still alive and was soon taken to the hospital after being in critical condition. While Christa is now back in prison, she has complained of pain and not being able to function like before. Meanwhile, there is no further update on what will happen to her.

Christa Pike's failed execution was performed by a physician who had botched another execution just months before

Christa Pike's botched execution has raised several questions, and now a court document obtained by PEOPLE has revealed that the physician who was selected by the Tennessee Department of Corrections (TDOC) to oversee Christa's execution had served as the physician in a failed execution just a few months before the botched September 30, 2026, execution.

According to the report, Dr. Mark Fowler and a three-person team had previously spent over an hour struggling to insert two IV lines during the planned execution of Tony Carruthers in May 2026. However, after their failure to secure the line, the officials called off the execution. What has now left many stunned is the fact that despite the outcome, Dr. Fowler was asked to serve in the same capacity at Christa Pike's execution.

As per the documents, Tony Carruthers was set for an execution on May 21, 2026. However, even after 30 minutes the IV team had still not managed to establish the two peripheral IV sites needed to lethally inject the inmate. The incident was mentioned in a declaration from the inmate's lawyer Maria DeLiberto of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which was obtained by the publication.

The TDOC Lethal Injection Execution Protocol clearly outlines the roles and responsibilities of each member of the team, and states that the physician is tasked with "determining if the inmate is deceased" and "establishing central line IV if necessary." However, Dr. Fowler attempted to insert the central line in two locations, but neither was successful.

The inmate's lawyer, Maria DeLiberto, later revealed that by the time the execution was called off, her client was "clearly in pain" and "gutturally groaning," saying: "It hurts, it hurts."

What are your thoughts on the physician appointed to oversee Christa Pike's execution?
