Abdul El-Sayed has defeated Republican nominee Mike Rogers in a tightly fought race to represent Michigan, making history in the annals of America. The left-wing democrat, 42, became the first Muslim to become a senator, bringing him into the national spotlight. But there's another story about the newly elected Michigan senator that has caught people's attention: his decades-long love story with his Indian-origin wife, Dr. Sarah Jukaku.

Dr. Jukaku grabbed the spotlight during the closing days of the historic 2026 Michigan Senate campaign, when her speech emphasizing Al-Sayed's authenticity went viral after the final campaign rally in Detroit. She addressed the crowd, "He will show up for you and your family just as he shows up for me and our family." She noted that her husband remains exactly the same person at home, because whatever he says, "he believes and means those things."

The new senator's wife is much more than her powerful voice; she is the love of his life. From meeting as two independent university students to El-Sayed's promise when he proposed to Sarah, here's a glimpse into their love story.

Abdul El-Sayed and Sarah Jukaku first met while studying at the University of Michigan. Both were associated with the university's Muslim Students' Association, where their friendship eventually blossomed into a relationship. Their love story moved quickly. Sarah was still a freshman when El-Sayed proposed to her. Speaking about the proposal in a 2006 interview with The Michigan Daily, she recalled his reassuring words. She said:

"When he proposed to me, I was a freshman. I was young, and one of the things he said was, 'We're still growing; now we can grow together.'"

The politician himself has been open about his affection for Sarah. Speaking about his decision to marry young, El-Sayed explained that he wanted to build a relationship based on commitment and shared growth. He told the publication, "I was going to meet one girl, and I was going to marry her."

The couple tied the knot in May 2006, while they were still young and pursuing their academic ambitions. Sarah had been with El-Sayed long before he entered politics, and she accompanied him on his journey through higher education, public health, and finally, electoral politics.

The couple lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and has two daughters, Emmalee and Serene. El-Sayed is a high-profile political figure today, but he often talks about how his family keeps him grounded.

Sarah Jukaku is a psychiatrist from Ann Arbor who also holds a leadership role at University of Michigan Health. She was born and raised in Michigan to an Indian immigrant family. While she grew up in the United States, her family traces its roots to Bhatkal, a coastal town in Karnataka's Uttara Kannada district, around 140 km from Mangaluru.

Sarah's father, Dr. Tayeb Jukaku, is a nephrologist who originally hails from Bhatkal. Her grandfather, Jukaku Shamshuddin, was a prominent lawyer, educator, and political figure who served as deputy minister for finance in the erstwhile Mysore State under Chief Minister B.D. Jatti.

She pursued her education at the University of Michigan before earning a master's degree from the University of Oxford. She later completed her medical degree at Columbia University's Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons in 2015 and went on to build a career in psychiatry.

Unlike her famous husband, Sarah has largely stayed away from the political spotlight, but she has occasionally offered glimpses into their relationship during El-Sayed's campaign. At one campaign rally, she jokingly told the audience, “Nobody tells him what to do except me!” Her remark drew laughter and offered a glimpse into the couple's playful dynamic.

Together with El-Sayed, who is of Egyptian origin, the couple's household is a mix of Egyptian heritage and South Indian roots. El-Sayed has also developed a fondness for his wife's cultural background over the years, often joking about how much Indian influence there is in his family.

In one interview, he humorously said, "Listen, I've been married in a South Indian family for 20 years, like... I am well inducted now. You know, I might be more Indian than I am Arab." On another occasion, he affectionately described his family as being "surrounded by desi women", referring to his wife and their two daughters.

El-Sayed's victory in Michigan's Senate race has added a new chapter to the couple's relationship. For Sarah, it marks another milestone in a journey that began in the middle of University lectures.
