The former Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to President Droupadi Murmu unexpectedly found himself going viral on the internet for his sharp and confident appearance. After recently taking premature retirement, the 30-year-old opened up about how the rumours about his multiple relationships have not only affected him but also given unnecessary stress to his family.
When Major Rishabh Singh Sambyal rose to fame online, so did the amount of rumours about his personal life. He recently sat down for a chat on Raj Shamani's podcast, Figuring Out and explained that social media has often presented him in ways that are far from reality.
The former ADC revealed that he often came across different claims about his personal life. Some allege that he married, and others mention that he has multiple wives or relationships. A few even went so far as to report that he cheated on someone or that he was a fraud. In his words:
"There are a lot of rumours. People say I'm married. They say I have multiple wives. They say I have multiple relationships. That's how they try to portray me and destroy my image. Then there are multiple allegations of cheating and fraud against me. I'm like, 'Are you serious?' You go through police verification and background checks, but people still say these things."
The former ADC expressed disbelief at the accusations and pointed out that officers like him often have to serve in sensitive military positions. So, they have to undergo extensive background verification and security checks.
Despite that, he said that many people continue to believe these fake stories without checking facts. Although the personal criticism does not affect him, things become difficult to manage when these rumours start to affect the people close to him.
Rishabh cited one particular incident where someone once sent his mother a picture of him standing next to a woman who was carrying a baby. There was no context to the image, which left his family concerned and confused. At the time, he was serving with the President of India when his mother forwarded that picture to him with questions. Recalling the incident, he said:
"My mother once got a picture of me standing with a girl who was carrying a baby. Somebody somehow sent it to her. She sent it to me while I was with the President, and my facial expression immediately changed. I said, 'Mom, come on.' That's a lighter example, but that's what disturbs me. I don't want to give my parents stress."
The small incident was an example of a larger issue where his parents had to bear the emotional burden of misinformation. According to Rishabh, he was not worried about what strangers thought of him. Instead, he worried about the stress that these rumours created for his ageing parents, who are unable to always differentiate between fact and fiction.
Apart from the online gossip, Rishabh also opened up about the personal sacrifices that he had to make while serving as ADC to the President of India. One of the lesser-known rules of the prestigious appointment is that ADCs are not allowed to get married during their tenure. They are prohibited from tying the knot to ensure that they are completely devoted to the hectic responsibilities of the role. However, he clarified that he did not take premature retirement to get married.
Major Rishabh also acknowledged that the role of Aide-de-Camp came with many personal limitations. He had to work long hours, fulfil constant public responsibilities and spend a lot of time away from his family. It meant there was very little room for a conventional personal life. The former officer acknowledged that loneliness was sometimes part of the job, and he used those quiet moments for introspection.
Major Rishabh Singh Sambyal is a former Indian Army officer. He served with the elite 4 Para (Special Forces) and earned the prestigious Balidaan Badge. The 30-year-old had also led the Jat Regiment Contingent during the 2021 Regiment Contingent during the Republic Day Parade. In fact, he also guided his unit to secure the Best Marching Contingent Trophy.
However, it was Rishabh's appointment as ADC to President Droupadi Murmu that brought him into the public spotlight. The videos of his appearances with the President at different events went viral. Eventually, his disciplined behaviour and impressive personality earned him the nickname "National Crush" on social media.
Despite a promising military career ahead of him, Rishabh decided to take premature retirement after serving the country for more than a decade. He explained that he had to take the tough call due to his family responsibilities and not due to any professional dissatisfaction. According to him, he reached a point where he had to choose between continuing his personal ambitions and being present for his parents.
