Teyana Taylor's Decade-Long Relationship With Ex-Husband, Iman Shumpert Amid Aaron Pierre Breakup

Teyana Taylor is one of the top American singers and actresses, having won her audience's hearts since her 2007 debut on MTV's My Super Sweet 16. Although it wasn't until 2014 that she released her debut album, VII. Over the years in the industry, while continuing to make a name for herself, Teyana Taylor dated many high-profile names. For the unversed, recently, the singer had been dating actor, Aaron Pierre since the beginning of 2025; however, after less than a year together, the two have decided to part ways.  

Before Teyana Taylor started dating Aaron Pierre, the singer was in a long-term relationship with NBA star, Iman Shumpert. The two who had known each other since 2011 even got married a couple of years later. In their time together, Teyana and Iman were blessed with two beautiful children, Iman "Junie" Tayla Shumpert Jr. and Rue Rose Shumpert. Teyana Taylor and Iman Shumpert met for the first time at a New York party 

Teyana Taylor and Iman Shumpert first met at a New York party in 2011. At the time, Iman had only just been drafted into the NBA. The pro athlete took it upon himself to approach Teyana Taylor first, although, according to her, Iman had "too much going on" to pique her interest. In a May 2018 appearance on The Wendy Williams Show, Teyana recalled the same and said that she didn't even like him at first because he was too young, had just gotten drafted, and was doing a lot. Another major reason Teyana wasn't interested in him was that Iman tried to talk to her; she was not single and in a relationship.

In the end, the duo did keep in touch because the Harlem-born artist frequently saw him around the city. Teyana and Iman did not form a romantic connection until a few years later, in 2013, when the singer volunteered to take care of Iman after learning of his injury that required knee surgery. According to reports, she helped take care of him for a week, and that's when sparks began to fly between them.

On Iman Shumpert's 24th birthday in June 2014, the couple finally went Instagram official. Teyana Taylor took to her official account to share a photo of her and her then-boyfriend kissing on the beach. She captioned the sweet picture, “Happy Birthday baby.. #ILoveU.” Just a few days after this, she also made her debut on Iman's profile when the NBA player showed off his girlfriend with a short clip of her, captioning it with a series of emojis.  

In September of the same year, Teyana and Iman made their first public appearance as a couple. This was during the 2014 BET Hip Hop Awards, which took place at the Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Centre. The following day, Iman shared a picture of the two of them on his social media.

The couple surprised their fans when Iman Shumpert announced in a Facebook post on September 2, 2015, that he and Teyana were expecting their first child. He revealed this by sharing an ultrasound image, letting everyone know that their daughter was expected to arrive in January 2016. At the time, the proud father-to-be said that he “couldn't be happier than to share my first child with the woman I intended to have my family with.”

On November 8, 2015, just months after announcing their pregnancy, Teyana and Iman revealed that they were engaged. According to reports, the NBA star popped the big question to his lady love during their baby shower at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Cleveland. Teyana hopped on her Instagram account to show off her spectacular engagement ring, which featured a big ruby in the middle of a gold and diamond-encrusted band, to her thousands of followers. Finally, a month later, on December 16, 2015, Tayana gave birth to her and her then-fiancé's daughter.  

Teyana Taylor and Iman Shumpert got married in secret in 2016 

To everyone's surprise, after appearing on The Wendy Williams Show in 2016, the singer revealed that she and Iman had privately tied the knot. However, Teyana did give a glimpse into their wedding ceremony some months later when she posted a photo to her Instagram. In the picture, the couple can be seen wearing matching red leather jackets with the words ‘I DO' and ‘I DO TOO' written on the back. They did not forget to include their firstborn, Junie, too, since she could be seen wearing a similar jacket as her parents with the words ‘OH!...ME TOO' emblazoned on the back.  

Teyana Taylor and Iman Shumpert reveal they are expecting their second child in 2020 

Being the icon that she is, Teyana announced that she is expecting her second child with her husband, Iman, in the music video for her song, Wake Up Love, which she dropped on June 12, 2020. In the sweetest ending to the video, the singer can be seen sharing a kiss with Iman and her first daughter, Junie, on the bed. Soon, she pulls down her blanket and lifts her shirt to reveal her baby bump for the first time ever. Finally, the couple welcomed their second child, another daughter, on September 6, 2020. Teyana and Iman named her Rue Rose.  

Teyana Taylor announced that she is separated from her husband, Iman Shumpert, in 2023 

After 7 years of being married to each other, Teyana shocked fans when she announced that she had been "separated and have been for a while now,” on September 17, 2023. Although she didn't reveal the exact reason for her sudden, drastic step, Teyana made it clear that infidelity was not what caused their split. She wrote:  

"We are still the best of friends, great business partners and are one hell of a team when it comes to co-parenting our 2 beautiful children. Most importantly we are FAMILY & in the 10yrs together, 7yrs married we ain’t ever played with or about THAT."
