Dave Franco And Alison Brie's Relationship Timeline, Met During Mardi Gras, Love At First Sight

Dave Franco, the younger brother of James Franco, is a renowned American actor and director. Although he began his career with small films like Superbad (2007) and Charlie St. Cloud (2010), he soon had his breakthrough two years later with the film, 21 Jump Street (2012). If you follow Dave's work closely, you might be aware that the filmmaker can often be seen starring alongside his wife, Alison Brie. Some of these films include The Disaster Artist (2017) and The Rental (2020), among others.  

Adding to the list, recently, the Hollywood power couple has been making headlines for their 2025 body-horror film, Together. As in real life, Dave Franco and Alison Brie also play a couple in this directorial debut film by Michael Shank. Many might not know this, but filmmaker, Dave Franco and his wife, Alison Brie, met for the first time while celebrating Mardi Gras in New Orleans back in 2011. During a July 2020 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Alison joked that the Mardi Gras festival was “where all great love stories begin,” and hers was no different. According to the actress, it was a mutual friend who introduced them to each other after noticing the attraction between them. Their encounter can be described as nothing short of a fateful meeting, as Dave wasn't originally part of the celebration but was invited by Alison's friend after they ran into the director at the airport. Recalling their time together, Alison confessed:  

“We had a great two days together. When I did my walk of shame in the morning, I accidentally stole his perfect white T-shirt, and he had to reach out to me to get it back. At the end of the trip, I wrote my phone number on it, and I hid it in his bag, so he found it on the way to the airport and texted.” 

Dave Franco allegedly went back to filming a movie in New York City after the big party. However, with Dave being aware that his next filming location would be Paris, the city of love, he couldn't resist inviting Alison for “some winning and dining”. According to reports, Dave Franco left a secret note in Alison's sweater on the last day of their trip, which read, “Come with me to Paris.”

If reports are to be believed, after a mere three months of dating and knowing each other, Alison Brie threw a surprise birthday party for her then-boyfriend, Dave Franco. During another conversation with host, Jimmy Fallon on his show, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in 2018, Dave gave the audience a glimpse into how everything went downhill and “out of control” super fast during his birthday party.  

While acknowledging it was an incredibly sweet gesture on Alison's part, The Now You See Me Now You Don't revealed that, being a “pretty private person,” he does not “like to be the centre of attention.” This is why, when he freaked out during his party, he chose to consume a w**d cookie to alleviate his anxiety. However, contrary to his belief, it had the exact opposite effect, which eventually led him to have “the first panic attack of my life.” Today, years later in their relationship, Dave and Alison both look back and laugh at the situation.

According to E! News, Dave Franco and Alison Brie got engaged on August 25, 2015, after nearly half a decade of dating. The couple has occasionally talked about their engagement story, which was nothing short of silly and sweet. Dave recounted how he planned to propose to his lady love during their trip to Big Sur, California. While he had the perfect idea for the proposal to wear the silver 'Zorro' mask that Alison wore on their first meeting, it turned out to be pretty “embarrassing” for the actor. Recalling the whole incident, Dave said on The Late Late Show with James Corden: 

“So, what she sees is me wearing this weird, stupid mask, holding up this janky stone ring. The entire proposal is her saying, ‘What is happening right now?’ And it’s me trying to explain how sweet it is that I kept the mask for five years.” 

Despite his awkward proposal, it did not stop Alison Brie from saying ‘yes’ to the filmmaker. After two years of engagement, Dave and Alison tied the knot in March 2017 in a quiet, intimate ceremony with little press coverage. Later that month, Dave did, however, reveal that his nuptials were “great, it was really special.” Similarly, when asked about what her favourite part of the day was on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, Alison said that it was probably their wedding vows.

This is because since they both wrote their own vows, they “didn't know what the other person was going to say.” Apparently, both Alison and Dave Franco said the same things that they wanted to be for one another, resulting in a very sweet moment. Now, years later, in 2025, the couple is still going strong in both their married life and their careers, often acting together.
