Add BollywoodShaadis on GoogleChristopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is currently grabbing a lot of attention. The film starring Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, and Tom Holland is all set to hit the theatres worldwide on July 17, 2026. According to reports, the film is based on Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey, written around the 8th century BCE. The story of The Odyssey revolves around the ancient hero, 'Odysseus', the king of Ithaca, and his long journey home after the Trojan War. Amid the buzz, here are the critics' early reviews.
The Odyssey follows the king of Ithaca, 'Odysseus' (played by Matt Damon) and his long journey home after the Trojan War. The war lasts for 10 years, but even after it ends, 'Odysseus' doesn’t return home for another decade. During this period, the king of Ithaca faces several obstacles and dangers. Back in Ithaca, everyone believes that the king is dead. Meanwhile, his beloved wife, 'Penelope' is being persuaded by 108 men to remarry her and become the king.
However, 'Penelope' doesn’t want to remarry and thus delays the process by tricking the suitors. She gives an odd condition to them that she will remarry only after she finishes weaving a shawl. But every night she secretly undoes the day’s work. 'Telemachus', who is the son of 'Odysseus' and 'Penelope', goes on a journey to look for his father. Along the way, he learns that his father is alive but is trapped on an island by a nymph named 'Calypso'.
While the Greek gods, 'Athena' and 'Zeus', join hands to free 'Odysseus', the god of the sea, 'Poseidon', is angry with him and keeps making his journey troublesome by causing storms and wrecking his ships. At the time, his crew die. The king of Ithaca, 'Odysseus', is the only survivor. After he returns to Ithaca, a set of problems awaits him.
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is a highly anticipated film of 2026. However, it seems like fans of Christopher Nolan are not totally satisfied with the movie. A fan wrote, "Odysseus yelling ‘Let’s go!’ makes more sense now that I’ve seen the movie. And the scene leading up to this is my favourite part of this film. That said, The Odyssey is good. Certainly not my favourite Nolan film but still worth seeing on the big screen."
Another fan wrote, "Just saw The Odyssey. A bizarre meandering, near-masterpiece. Epic but utterly bereft of glory or grandeur. Solid performances by all. Tragic rather than heroic. LOTR leaves you feeling warm and hopeful, but The Odyssey leaves you feeling haunted. Much more Euripides than Aeschylus." Sharing an overview, a critic wrote:
"Well, we finally saw The Odyssey. We were all excited and hoping for the best, but this was a big swing-and-miss by Christopher Nolan. Look, I get that it’s a ‘classic,’ but The Odyssey is basically 3 hours of the longest, most pointless road trip in history while the wife sits at home weaving the same tapestry on repeat. The gods are petty drama queens, the monsters are random, and the whole thing seems like it was directed by a guy who really loved hearing himself talk. Half the movie is just people crying, sacrificing animals. Ten years to get home? Bro, use Google Maps. Skip it unless your professor is forcing you. 1/5 stars – Overhyped ancient snoozefest."
A third fan wrote, "The Odyssey: A movie about defying the gods, losing your identity and becoming victim to time. Kinda messy but love the ambition. The cast is excellent, but John Leguizamo is the MVP for me. Ludwig Goransson brings it as always. Not my favourite Nolan, but had a blast with this."
