Outlander Season 8 premiere recap: Does 'Faith' live, after all?

The Season 8 premiere answers this question head-on. The episode, titled 'Son of a Rebel', confirms that 'Faith' (played by Ella McKenzie) did survive her supposed death in Season 2. While her identity remained hidden from Jamie and Claire, Faith has grown into a responsible woman who is the mother of two daughters, 'Jane' (Amelia Clarkson) and 'Frances' (Isabella Rowan).

In the episode’s opening, 'Jamie' and 'Claire' meet a man named 'Vasquez' under the guise of discussing the whisky business. In reality, they wanted to uncover more details about 'Jane' and 'Fanny', which could lead them to Faith's reality. As the conversation unfolds, Claire becomes overwhelmed, thinking that her daughter might have grown up believing she was abandoned and unwanted. Jamie, however, reassures Claire that they have to believe 'Faith' grew up being deeply loved. Eventually, 'Jamie', 'Claire', and 'Fanny' take off for their home in North Carolina.

What has changed in Fraser's Ridge?

Back on Fraser's Ridge, more surprises are waiting. Jamie's nephew, 'Ian' (played by John Bell), welcomes the trio with a rebuilt house that now features a surgery room for Claire and a small bedroom for Fanny. Also, his wife, 'Rachel ' (Izzy Meikle-Small), is heavily pregnant. The settlement has grown and changed, and new faces have joined the community.

However, all isn't as well as it looks. It doesn't take 'Jamie' and 'Claire' long to realise that the war has followed them home. As Sam Heughan, who plays 'Jamie Fraser', hinted before the season aired, the final chapter balances emotional reunions with the harsh realities of history. Speaking about the impending war in this season, Heughan told PEOPLE:

"The Frasers are confronted with the question of what they are willing to sacrifice for the place they call home and, more importantly, what they would sacrifice to stay together."

What happens to 'William'?

Jamie's illegitimate son, 'William' (played by Charles Vandervaart), had one of the most tragic arcs in the Outlander season 7 finale. After meeting Jane at a brothel as she tried to protect her younger sister, 'Fanny', 'William' tried to help her. He sheltered the two sisters at the military encampment while seeking help to save Jane's fate for killing a British officer who tried to assault 'Fanny'. However, 'Jane' was eventually arrested and harshly interrogated. Before William could return with help from 'Jamie', 'Jane' died by suicide.

Now devastated and guilt-ridden, William is navigating an emotional turmoil, adding to the fact that he had recently learned that Jamie, and not 'Lord John Grey' (David Berry), is his biological father. In the new season, we find William in an inebriated state, thanks to his excessive drinking. Adding to his misery, he learns that his cousin, 'Ben', has died in service, and his widow, 'Amaranthus' (Carla Woodcock), is now at his door, along with her infant son, 'Trevor'. William promises to help 'Amaranthus' and the baby in any way he can.
