'Unmadham' Ending Explained, 'Shelly' Takes Help Of 'Keerthana's' Spirit To Solve The Case

Unmadham follows 'Shelly', a police officer who aspires to be a screenwriter. He takes a year-long break to focus on writing. However, after repeated rejections, 'Shelly' returns to his police duty to support his family. Soon, he gets transferred to a new police station. Upon reaching there, 'Shelly' finds an old, mysterious murder case that everyone is afraid to investigate, as they believe that it is cursed.

Anyone who takes charge of the case suffers physical or psychological consequences. But 'Shelly' decides to investigate the case secretly, as he thinks the case could provide him with a great story for his movie script. Despite his colleague’s warnings, 'Shelly' dives deeper into the case and becomes obsessed with it. He loses his grip on reality and sanity. 'Shelly' is trying his best to solve the old case while pursuing his dream of becoming a successful filmmaker.

'Shelly's' obsession forces him to see visuals of the victim, 'Keerthana'. However, he is unable to distinguish between reality and his imagination. 'Shelly' refuses to leave the case even as people around him, label him as mad. Meanwhile, 'Shelly' visits a doctor due to his extreme attachment and obsession with 'Keerthana's' case. After the diagnosis, doctors state that 'Shelly' is having a mental health issue.

Despite his constant struggle with reality and imagination, 'Shelly' manages to solve 90 per cent of the case. But he still needs solid evidence to prove what really happened. During the climax, 'Shelly' is seen driving the car. At that moment, he loses control of his car. By this time, 'Shelly' has started believing 'Keerthana's' spirit is guiding him. When he regains consciousness, 'Shelly' finds his car at the place where the crime happened.

'Keerthana's' spirit shows 'Shelly' the place where the bodies of the two murdered people are buried. Finding these bodies gives 'Shelly' the ultimate evidence to prove what happened in 'Keerthana's' case. However, the ending leaves the audience confused about whether 'Keerthana's' spirit existed and the case is actually cursed, or it is just 'Shelly's' imagination.

Unmadham is directed by Kiran Das and written by Shahi Kabir. The film was produced by Kumar Mangat Pathak and Abhishek Pathak through Panorama Studios and T-Series Films. Unmadham stars Kunchacko Boban as 'Shelly', and Raina Radhakrishnan as 'Keerthana'. Kunchacko’s impeccable acting was on point. His character, 'Shelly', is the heart of the film, Unmadham.

In an interview with The Hindu, Kunchacko revealed that his role in Unmadham is different from the characters he has portrayed in other films written by Shahi Kabir. Previously, they collaborated in films, including Nayattu and Officer on Duty.
