Add BollywoodShaadis on GoogleMacKenzie Scott is back in the headlines for her philanthropic work. According to reports, Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos' ex-wife has been donating large sums to charity, and it seems Elon Musk does not agree with her approach to giving. Amid the ongoing debate about the same, let's take a quick look at who MacKenzie is and her philosophy behind "no strings" donations.
MacKenzie Scott has a net worth of USD 31.4 billion, according to Forbes' real-time net worth data. And that is after donating over USD 26 billion to charity. The news was first shared by an X post by Pubity alleging that MacKenzie had shared a hefty sum of USD 26.3 billion to charity, making her one of the biggest individual donors in history, and that she wanted to spend most of her Bezos fortune "on helping others and making the world a better place."
However, it seems like Elon Musk disagrees with her approach to philanthropy. In a reply to a user's comment on X, he expressed his dismay. An X user replied, "Unfortunately, she’s spending it making the world a worse place." To which Elon responded, saying, "Sadly, yes." For the unversed, his comment comes in response to MacKenzie Scott's "no strings attached" style of giving.
For those who are not aware, "no strings" donations allow the nonprofits to which she donates to have full control over how best to deploy the new funds. Elon Musk had previously expressed his views on the same and stated:
"If you care about the reality of goodness instead of the perception of it, then it is very hard to give away money effectively."
MacKenzie Scott has become one of the most prolific philanthropists in history since her 2019 divorce from Jeff Bezos. Her philanthropic organisation, called Yield Giving, has awarded more than USD 26 billion to thousands of nonprofits. All her donations follow the same pattern: unrestricted grants that allow organisations to decide how the money is used.
Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos' ex-wife, MacKenzie Scott, is a philanthropist and author. She was married to the billionaire for 25 years before parting ways in 2019. As part of their divorce, MacKenzie received a 4 per cent stake in the online retailer. In May 2019, shortly after she announced the terms of her divorce on X, she signed the Giving Pledge, promising to give away at least half of her wealth over her lifetime.
The Yield Giving website states that MacKenzie Scott has donated over USD 26 billion to more than 2,700 nonprofits. Apart from her philanthropic work, she has also published two novels. She completed her education with author, Toni Morrison at Princeton, and worked as a research assistant for her. Her latest donation went to Active Minds. According to reports, she donated USD 20 million to the nonprofit.
For the unversed, Active Minds is a nonprofit dedicated to promoting mental health awareness and reducing stigma among youth, according to Fortune. It was also a "no strings" donation. Sharing what the organisation will do with the hefty amount, a statement said that it plans to use part of the funding to expand its existing programs in schools, colleges, and universities.
The organisation will also invest in its Mental Health Advocacy Academy for secondary school students and its Mental Health Advocacy Institute for college students. According to reports, both initiatives have been designed to build mental health awareness, develop student leaders, and encourage peer-led conversations within campuses and local communities.
Active Minds shared that the unrestricted nature of the donation will also allow it to plan for the long term. They asserted that it would help them adapt their work over the coming years rather than focusing on short-term spending tied to traditional grant cycles.
