Peter Cullen’s brother Larry left a different kind of influence on his life
Peter Cullen was a father of five children, including Clay, Angus, Claire and Pilar. He was also a grandfather to three. His eldest son Clay chose a career behind the scenes in Hollywood as a stunt performer, with credits on major projects like Black Panther, Iron Man and several other big films.
The family has largely stayed out of the spotlight, so very little is known publicly about them. Peter also grew up in a large household alongside three siblings, Michaela, Sonny and Larry, who have all kept a low profile away from media attention.
It was Larry who shaped one of his most famous roles. Having served as a captain in the US Marine Corps, he unknowingly gave Peter the key to playing 'Optimus Prime.' In a previous conversation with Comic Book Movie, Peter remembered how his brother's words came back to him right before his Transformers audition.
He said Larry had once told him that if he was going to play a hero, he should play a genuine one, not the loud, tough-guy type seen in movies. His brother had advised him to show strength through kindness, compassion, and understanding instead of shouting.
Peter said that Larry’s advice stayed with him and poured out naturally in the audition room. He later described driving home that day with a quiet sense of pride, feeling he had just given the best audition of his life, and he remained deeply thankful to his brother for that guidance.

Peter Cullen's career is one of the longest and most loved in voice acting, stretching over six decades. He started his career during the late 60s on television, where his knack for impressions and character voices quickly got him noticed. That led him to animation, where he became a go-to voice for studios.
In the 70s and 80s, he became well-known for his association with shows like Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo, The Smurfs, Voltron, DuckTales, Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers, Winnie the Pooh, and many others. He was the first voice of 'Eeyore,' a role he held for decades because no one else could capture that slow, gloomy warmth.
His defining moment came in 1984 when he was cast as 'Optimus Prime' in Transformers. Inspired by his brother Larry, a former Marine captain, he gave the Autobot leader a voice that was strong yet deeply kind.
He would go on to voice the character again in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen in 2009, and kept returning to it right through to Rise of the Beasts in 2023. Alongside that, he voiced 'King Kong' in 1976, playing the predator's vocal effects. This was followed by dozens of other films and series, becoming one of the most respected voices in the industry.
