The actress, known for her roles in The Donna Reed Show and Coach, wasn’t keeping well for some time, as she was suffering from liver-related issues. At that time, her family didn't share the cause of Shelley's sudden passing. However, recent reports have revealed exactly what happened to her.
What caused Shelley Fabares’ death?
As per Shelley’s family, the TV actress died of pneumonia. The family told media outlets that Shelley was previously diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis in 2000 and had a liver transplant. According to reports, in 1998, Shelley had a bad fall, after which she went to the hospital to get herself checked. Doctors found elevated liver counts, but her condition worsened by 1999 after an esophageal bleed. After waiting for two years, the actress finally found a match and successfully underwent a liver transplant.
Shelley is survived by her husband, M*A*S*H star Mike Farrell, and stepchildren. In a statement to PEOPLE, the Fabares family confirmed Shelley's death on August 23, 2026 (ET) and remembered her as a loving wife, stepmother, sister, aunt, and friend who brought warmth, humor, and comfort to those around her. The statement can be read as:
“To her family and friends, Shelley was a source of love, strength, laughter, and comfort. She was a devoted wife, cherished stepmother, daughter, sister, niece, aunt, family member, and loyal friend whose warmth, generosity, humor, and grace made an enduring difference in the lives of everyone who knew her. She had a remarkable ability to make people feel welcomed, valued, and cared for."
All about Shelley Fabares' professional and personal life
Shelley Fabares began her acting career at the age of 10 and gained national fame at 14 as 'Mary Stone', the daughter on The Donna Reed Show. She also starred opposite Elvis Presley in three films: Girl Happy (1965), Spinout (1966) and Clambake (1967). Other shows she appeared on included Police Story, The Rockford Files, The Love Boat and Murder, She Wrote.
Apart from her acting career, Shelley also ventured into music and released a song, Johnny Angel, in 1962, which reached number one on the charts. She also released a few albums, including The Things We Did Last Summer, Teenage Triangle, Bye Bye Birdie, and More Teenage Triangle. Shelley was a vocal advocate for Alzheimer's research after her mother secretly battled the disease.
Talking about her married life, Shelley was married twice. Her first marriage was to record and film producer Lou Adler in 1964. However, their marital bliss soon faded, and the couple separated around 1966 and divorced in 1980. She then married actor Mike Farrell in 1984 and kept their relationship private. Shelley Fabares never had biological kids. However, she was a loving stepmother to Mike Farrell's children from his previous marriage to actress Judy Farrell.
