Dolly Parton passed away at the age of 80. Brian Seaver, a close family member of the singer-songwriter, announced her death on August 25, 2026. She was reportedly silently battling cancer in her final days, and even her family members were unaware of the exact extent of her ailment. Dolly Parton faced a bitter family feud over inheritance; who will be the successor to her USD 450 million fortune?

Dolly Parton had a glorious career in music and acting, with four decades of contributions to Hollywood. She has given the industry numerous hits, including Jolene, 9 to 5, and I Will Always Love You. Her work and her beloved public persona helped her build a massive USD 450 million estate. Until her demise, she reportedly managed to keep her estate planning as secretive as her illness, as per a source close to her.

The source told Daily Mail that Dolly Parton secretly hired a bigwig lawyer to plan her inheritance. They also revealed that the attorney wasn't someone Dolly's family, her inner business circle, or other close ones were well-acquainted with, which made it easier for the songstress to keep the entire process under wraps. The source was quoted as saying:

"She got a bigwig lawyer from both LA and Nashville to handle her estate planning a few years ago. He was not someone a lot of us knew."

Dolly's fortune primarily stems from three sources, her lucrative stake in the Dollywood entertainment business; a 3,000-song catalog estimated at USD 120 million; and the charitable Dollywood Foundation. Years before her death, Dolly placed her huge stake in the Dollywood theme park, estimated at around USD 165 million (according to Forbes), into a trust. Following that, she began planning the inheritance process, according to the source.

The source further stated that Dolly, who had no kids, wanted her estate to be divided in a way that leaves no scope for any dispute. However, more than two decades later, she allegedly found herself at the center of a bitter family feud over her mother's wealth. It might have motivated Dolly to accelerate the planning of her own USD 450 million estate's inheritance. Reports suggest the singer had chalked out a succession plan, though details of who gets what remain undisclosed.

More about Dolly Parton's death

According to reports, when Dolly Parton's health took a turn for the worse over the weekend, her team scrambled to bring her closest family and friends to Nashville. Sources revealed to TMZ that as the hours passed, it became increasingly clear that Dolly's condition was worsening. It was what prompted her team to quickly arrange travel for her loved ones so they could be by her side during the tough time.

Dolly Parton died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville on the morning of August 25, 2026. She had been struggling a lot with health issues in the months leading up to her death. This included immune-system and digestive issues as well as medication-related problems.

Dolly had previously shared that a kidney stone issue in September 2025 led her to skip the highly anticipated launch of Dollywood’s Nightflight Expedition ride. She added that her doctor had advised her not to travel at that time and to take a few days to recover.

On August 26, 2026, it was revealed that Dolly had briefly battled cancer in her final days. The singer was surrounded by her loved ones when she died.
