'Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai' has arrived in theatres on June 5, 2026, despite facing certain legal problems. It features Varun Dhawan, Pooja Hegde, and Mrunal Thakur as the main leads.
Reported to be David Dhawan’s final film, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai has been in the headlines before its release. The romantic comedy drama has already gotten itself involved in legal trouble due to its use of old songs, and questions are being raised about the lack of originality in the film industry. Irrespective of all these issues, the movie has finally arrived in theatres on June 5, 2026.
With Varun Dhawan in the lead alongside Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur paired opposite the actor, the glimpses hinted at a typical David Dhawan film that we have seen many times over the years. But the real question is, does the movie impress in all the departments, or is it completely the opposite? Keep reading to know more!
It is not new for the audience to see the hero getting involved in chaos after he gets connected with two girls in different situations. Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai follows the same pattern, where two people are married, but the wife does not want a baby as she wants to keep her career safe. The marriage is in trouble for this reason, leading to the couple’s meeting with a counsellor. When they are about to separate, the court tells them to take six months before taking a final decision.
Here is where the second girl enters the man’s life. The woman’s brother even allows the love to happen. This is the point where the man starts facing the worst phase of his life. Both girls get pregnant. Things are unpredictable about what’s going to happen next and how the man is going to handle the situation. But one thing is ensured here. The man will undoubtedly return to his wife and possibly look after both the babies. What happens here is something that people need to see in theatres.
The storyline of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is not fresh. Take out the angle of the babies, and it will possibly remind people of Saajan Chale Sasural or Gharwali Baharwali. Anyone can feel for David Dhawan as he could not find anything unique for his son. But it is the direction that saves the film from sinking. David is habituated to directing such films, and he ensures to present every scene in such a form that people do not get bored at any point.
On the other hand, the pre-interval portions are not as entertaining as expected. The humour looks forced in certain portions, and the movie tries its best to get the attention of the viewers. However, the funny lines are very average here. The opening sequence is specifically going to test anyone’s patience since it has been elongated beyond a certain extent. One can easily say that a few minutes could have been trimmed in this moment.
Things pick up in the second half, and here is where the writing works in favour of the movie. Viewers can easily connect with the characters instead of ignoring them. The funny sequences look better as David Dhawan uses his expertise. But one also wonders why he did not do the same before the interval. The music, despite the use of old songs, works because they have been integrated perfectly into the moments where they are needed.
Movies with big stars have a habit of wasting the potential of actresses. The characters of the actresses are written in such a manner that their existence doesn’t matter at all to the audience. Thankfully, David Dhawan has not done the same thing in Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai. Both Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur get a chance to shine on screen. The writing is still a little faulty, specifically for the latter, whose preference changes suddenly once she becomes pregnant. It raises questions since it was something that she was trying to avoid.
Varun Dhawan is energetic as always. But it is the right time for the actor to start experimenting with better characters. Maniesh Paul also leaves an impression. Casting Mouni Roy as Varun’s mother was undoubtedly a wrong decision on the part of the makers. However, it becomes acceptable, considering the storyline. Other actors, including Chunky Pandey, Rakesh Bedi, and Jimmy Shergill, leave a mark despite the fact that their characters are not very different.
