It has only been two episodes since the Dutton Ranch premiere, but viewers already agree that it is turning out to be the perfect Yellowstone spinoff. The show, which debuted its first two episodes on Paramount+ on Friday, May 15, 2026, wasted no time in pulling 'Beth' and 'Rip' into another explosive ranch war just as they were beginning to settle into a quieter life in Montana.

Just when the couple thought they had left behind the violence and chaos of Yellowstone, they are thrown into a fresh feud in South Texas. So much has happened in just two episodes that we need to talk about it.

A quick recap of Dutton Ranch, Episodes 1 and 2

The first two episodes of Dutton Ranch begin with 'Beth Dutton' (Kelly Reilly), 'Rip Wheeler' (Cole Hauser), and 'Carter' (Finn Little) trying to rebuild their lives after a devastating wildfire ravages their Montana property. Forced to leave everything behind, the trio relocates to Rio Palmona, Texas, to start afresh. They purchase the historic Edwards Ranch and rename it 'Dutton Ranch'.

However, the peace doesn't last long. A clash quickly erupts between Beth and the powerful ranch owner, 'Beulah Jackson' (Annette Bening), and Rip unexpectedly discovers the corpse of 'Wes' (Hart Denton), who was killed on Yellowstone, buried on their land. Rather than reporting it, Rip decides to hide the corpse instead, in an attempt to protect his family from yet another explosive ranch feud.

Carter, meanwhile, struggles to adapt to the Texan lifestyle, and he grows increasingly fond of 'Oreana' (Natalie Alyn Lind), a local girl whose rebellious nature attracts him. However, this blooming romance may not be the best decision for Beth and Rip.

Why Carter and Oreana's romance could be a disaster

We see Carter growing increasingly close to Oreana after his earlier arrest. He finds himself drawn to her rebellious nature as she tries to escape her controlling family life. Their chemistry is obvious almost immediately, and Carter finally seems to find someone who understands him outside the ranch world. However, there is a big reveal awaiting him.

Near the end of Episode 2, viewers learn that Oreana is directly connected to the Jackson family. She is actually Rob-Will’s daughter and Beulah Jackson’s granddaughter. With this revelation, what first looked like a harmless teenage romance now has the potential to become Beth’s biggest problem. If Carter becomes emotionally attached to someone tied to the family already at war with the Duttons, Beth and Rip may eventually be forced to choose between protecting Carter from breaking down and defending the ranch.

Does Beth find out about Wes' body?

With the building tension, the biggest question after Episode 2 is whether Rip eventually tells Beth the truth about the corpse found on the ranch. Beth has already noticed something is off after waking up in the middle of the night and realising that Rip is missing from bed. Even though he tries to quietly deal with the situation alone, long-time fans know that secrets really stay buried in the Yellowstone universe.

More than a couple, Beth and Rip have always operated as partners, especially when it comes to protecting their ranch. If Beth finds out that Rip had hit a murder victim without telling her, it could create tension between them, especially given that the Jackson family already sees them as enemies, and now that even Carter's emotions are at stake. However, her ruthless instincts may actually push back to eventually support Rip’s decision once she learns the truth. As we all know, protecting family has always mattered more to both of them than abiding by the law.

Beluah Jackson may be the biggest threat to Dutton Ranch

The Jackson family's matriarch, Beulah Jackson, is certainly the central villain of Dutton Ranch, as firmly established by episode 2. After Wes’ murder, Joaquin has tried to manage the fallout, but it hasn't turned fruitful enough, and now Behula focuses entirely on protecting the Jackson family's name. She has also pressed Chet (Hart Denton), the new foreman, into silencing the ongoing murmurs about Wes' disappearance. She is also making sure to control Oreana's future.

Beulah’s calm demeanour and calculation are what make her especially dangerous, unlike her son, 'Rob-Will'. She understands the power of influence and knows better to bury scandals before they explode publicly. And now, with Rip secretly hiding a body and Carter unknowingly getting involved with her granddaughter, it will be impossible for the Duttons to avoid their sworn enemy.

What happens next in Dutton Ranch?

With Episode 2 ending, there are multiple storylines moving forward, each more dangerous than the last. With Rip now carrying the burden of hiding Wes' murder, 'Sheriff Wade' (Josh Stewart) begins investigating the missing cowboy after 'Whitney's (Olivia Rose Keegan) report filing in Episode 1. It’s just a matter of time before the officials reach the abandoned mine, and if the body is found, it will set the stage for another nightmare for the Duttons. At the same time, Carter’s growing bond with Oreana threatens to emotionally pull him into the middle of the ranch war. As it turns out, the violence of Yellowstone is inevitable in their new life in South Texas.

Episode 3 of Dutton Ranch will air on Friday, May 22, 2026, dropping on Paramount+ at 3:00 AM (ET). What are your thoughts on the storyline so far?
