Cristiano Ronaldo's wife, Georgina Rodriguez, shared her thoughts on her husband's retirement

For any player, retiring after creating history is not easy. At the age of 41, Ronaldo made the big decision. He shared a video on his Instagram handle and captioned it as "Portugal will always be in me." Georgina was the first of the few who quickly supported him during this sensitive time in his life. She liked the video and commented with crying and heart emojis.

Ronaldo was the one who made Portugal the most-loved team in international football. He became the leading goalscorer and most-capped player. In his retirement video, Ronaldo mentioned that he would give back the number 7 shirt, in which he played in historical matches.

Ronaldo revealed that he never felt that the shirt belonged to him alone, but that for the 23 years he had the privilege to wear it and defend it by carrying it with him into stadiums around the world. He said:

"To the Portuguese people. The day has come for me to hand back the number 7 shirt of our national team. I never felt it belonged to me alone. But for 23 years, I had the privilege and the responsibility of wearing it, defending it and carrying it with me into stadiums all around the world."

Over the two decades, Ronaldo kept making history with every match he played. He has represented his country in six World Cups. However, his last campaign ended in a 1-0 defeat to Spain in the Round of 16. Ronaldo accepted that announcing retirement from international football wasn't easy. But he had to pass the baton to the next generation, as per the Portuguese's great saying. He said:

“Today, the time has come to pass it on to the future. It was not an easy decision. Because some decisions are not made with the mind alone. They are also made with the heart. A journey that began in August 2003 and changed my life forever has come to an end."

Ronaldo further revealed that whenever he played the matches, it wasn't about the goals, records or trophies, but for the Portuguese people who are living abroad to feel closer ot their home. He revealed how millions of Portuguese people became a part of his life due to the game.

Ronaldo accepted that he always wanted to win, be better and make history. He always believed that he could achieve much more, and he gave it all to his jersey. He recalled the victories he would never forget and the defeats that still hurt whenever he remembers them.

Ronaldo added that he made mistakes and suffered because of them. Despite it, he never gave up and never thought of not representing Portugal. Cristiano further stated the lessons he learned from his international football journey, which are that goals fade, trophies end up in museums, records break, but the only thing that cannot erase them is the place you hold in people's hearts.
