Who Was Dash Crofts? Singer Dies At 85 Due To Heart Surgery Complications, Gave Up Playing Baseball

In a piece of heartbreaking news, Dash Crofts, best known for the hit song, Summer Breeze, passed away. It was producer, Louie Shelton who announced that the singer passed away. Shelton has worked closely with Dash and has produced his projects, including 1971's Year of Sunday, 1972's Summer Breeze and Diamond Girl, and 1973.

For the unversed, Dash Croft was born in Cisco, Texas. Well, when he was young, he had played the piano for Dean Beard and the Crew Cats. It was here that he met Jim Seals, who was also a Texan. Both of them toured with The Champs back in 1958 and then created their first hit with Tequila. It was in the 1960s when both of them moved to the West Coast, and by 1969, they had created a new soundtrack called the Ultimate Classic Rock.

A report by TMZ revealed that a family member of Dash Crofts revealed that the singer passed away on March 25, 2026. The cause of his demise was due to complications related to his heart surgery. Speaking of Dash's funeral, the family member told the publication that no plans for a memorial have been set at the moment. Producer Shelton, sharing a snap of Dash, had reportedly written on Facebook:

"Sad to hear our dear brother and partner in music has passed away today. Sending love and prayers to all his family and many fans. R.I.P. my brother.....Dash Crofts."

Dash Crofts real name was Darrell Crofts, who was weighing between a career in baseball and music. He started playing the piano at the mere age of 5 and took drum lessons when he was around 10 or 11. When Dash met Jim Seals, the latter was in class eight and wanted to learn the saxophone. Dash, on the other side, was a high school drummer at a local swing and country dance band.

Dash Crofts and Jim Seals had met one another when they were teenagers, and it was with The Champs in 1958 that they had created their smash hit titled, Tequila. It was in the 1960s that they formed their own band, which made a name for itself on the charts. It was between 1972 and 1976 that Dash and Jim received five gold albums. Well, the pair in 1974 turned heads when they recorded an anti-abortion song called "Unborn Child," and, according to social media reports, it was during the 1980s that Dash and Jim parted ways. This was because, according to social media reports, dance music had become the mainstream beat.

Dash Crofts never focused on the money-making aspect of music

Dash Crofts was a musician who had created some of the biggest yacht rock hits of his time. Producer, Shelton, apart from producing Year of Sunday, Summer Breeze, and Diamond Girl, also produced Get Closer. Well, interestingly, Summer Breeze, Diamond Girl and Get Closer had reached the top 10 on the Billiboard 100 chart and had defined soft, rock, R&B, smooth pop genre which is known as yacht rock. Well, according to a report by Ultimate Classic Rock, Dash got his kick to his drummer career with the band called Dean Beard and also the Crew Cats. It was here that he had met Jim Seals, who was a fellow Texas musician. Together, they created The Champs after their biggest hit, Tequila. Crofts had once revealed how he never believed in making money and said:

"We realised that we had to get out of the money-making aspect of loud rock 'n' roll into some music which we really believed in."

However, things changed when they came across the Baha'i faith, which gave them a lot to think about. Their priorities began to change. Dash had revealed that when one gets into music, the goal is to become as famous and rich as possible. Dash Crofts had mentioned:

"It’s an ego trip. When we came across the Baha’i faith, it talked about things like oneness of god, the oneness of mankind, the oneness of religion, equality of men and women, elimination of prejudices of all kinds. And we thought, wow, this is really lofty stuff. Probably too lofty for us, but it interested us. And so, we started looking into it.”

Fans grieve over the demise of Dash Crofts

Producer Louie Shelton's Facebook post reportedly went viral, and fans, after reading about Dash Croft's demise, were shocked. They had recalled how Dash and Jim were one of the best singing pairs in history. Well, it was in the Baha'i Scriptures that Dash and Seals together had found all the answers related to his life. Dash realised that every religion proclaimed one thing: to love one another. This is because the base of the Baha'i faith revolves around love, tolerance and also that every race and sex is equal, and there needs to be worldwide unity.
