Reggie Bannister, the veteran actor best known for the Phantasm franchise, is no more. The 80-year-old actor died peacefully at his home on Sunday, August 9, 2026. His wife, Gigi, confirmed the news the following day, sharing a glimpse into his final hours in her statement.

Bannister, whom fans saw as the fearless, shotgun-wielding hero of Phantasm, led a life of debilitating neurological difficulties that significantly affected his mobility. Amid his demise, another theory has emerged regarding his health: a possible connection to his military years.

What was Reggie Bannister’s cause of death?

Bannister's family said he died after suffering from the prolonged and debilitating effects of Parkinson's disease and Lewy body dementia. He died peacefully at his home in Crestline, where he had been receiving care with his wife and caregivers nearby. His family released a statement to PEOPLE that reads:

"Reggie Bannister fought the debilitating effects of Parkinson’s while resting comfortably in his Mountain home with caregivers and Gigi by his side. Gigi was with him till the end, as she had vowed, until death, and meant it. Reggie's final request was to please let his fans know, ‘It’s never over.’"

Gigi later described the actor's final morning at the couple's cabin in an emotional social media tribute. She said she had checked on him early that morning and found him quiet and sleeping. She returned to sleep, but later their cat prompted her to check on him again. Gigi said she knew something had happened and found Bannister looking peaceful in his bed. She wrote in her tribute:

"At 0345 am on Sunday, August 9, 2026, I last checked on my beloved Reggie Bannister's condition. He was panting but quiet and asleep. I was exhausted, so I went back to sleep. At 0600 hours, our kitty, GG (Grey Guy), who has been sleeping on Reggie's bed at night, came running upstairs and jumped onto the bed meowing! I went down to see what the problem was...Somewhere inside... in my soul... I knew."

The emotional note continued that he "looked so quiet and peaceful. Like he was asleep. In his bed." Gigi shared her bittersweet emotions at having to say goodbye to the man she had loved for over two decades. She concluded her tribute on a poignant note: "I will see you on the flip side, honey bunny. Save me a hug! Wait for me. - Gigi"

What health problems did Reggie Bannister have?

Bannister's health struggles became increasingly severe during the final decade of his life. He battled Parkinson's disease, a progressive neurological disorder that can affect movement, balance, and other bodily functions. He was also diagnosed with Lewy body dementia, another progressive neurological condition associated with changes in thinking, movement, and behavior.

According to reports, his condition worsened considerably in his final years. He eventually required extensive care at home and spent his final period receiving hospice care at the couple's mountain residence. His wife had previously spoken about the devastating impact of his illnesses and the challenges of caring for him.

A GoFundMe campaign was also launched to help with his hospice and caregiving expenses as his condition progressed. The campaign ultimately raised close to USD 80,000, according to Entertainment Weekly.

As his illnesses progressed, Bannister increasingly withdrew from the public spotlight. He received care from professionals and his loved ones as his Parkinson's symptoms became more debilitating.

Why Gigi Bannister believes Agent Orange caused her husband's health problems

Beyond his Phantasm fame, Bannister was a Vietnam War veteran, and his wife has linked his later neurological illnesses to his exposure to Agent Orange during his military service. Speaking to TMZ, Gigi noted:

"Being the true patriot that Reggie was, two weeks later he was in Boot Camp. Eight weeks after that, he was in Tuy Hoa and Da Nang calling in airstrikes on Agent Orange-denuded hilltops. Ultimately, this resulted in Reggie’s ‘later in life’ diagnosis of Parkinson’s. While in Vietnam, Reggie often found solace and peace by playing his guitar and singing folk songs to, and with, his platoon."

So what exactly is Agent Orange? It's a herbicide that the U.S. military used extensively during the Vietnam War. Research revealed that prolonged exposure to this herbicide can lead to several serious health conditions. However, the Agent Orange connection should be understood as the family's account of a possible link, rather than a definitive statement that the exposure caused Bannister's Parkinson's disease or Lewy body dementia.

Rest in peace, Reggie!
