However, it was her earrings that caught everyone’s attention as they were a tribute to Princess Diana.
Meghan Markle was called out for her ‘fixation’ with Princess Diana
For the night out, Meghan wore Diana’s diamond and sapphire butterfly-shaped earrings. The stunning piece of jewellery popped out of her slicked-back bun. As soon as the pictures of Meghan’s recent outing went viral, many pointed out the Duchess’ fixation with Diana.
In a recent interview with News24, No Filter with Zack Peter host Zack Peter spoke about Meghan’s earrings and stated that she has a ‘very strange obsession with Princess Diana’. Speaking about the same, she said:
“She’s trying to curate this image to follow in the footsteps of Diana because I think she’s fame hungry and I think she wants to be the next Princess Diana, but I don’t think the UK will ever let that happen.”
This is not the first time that Meghan has worn Diana’s butterfly earrings; she wore the earrings during her and Prince Harry’s tour of Australia in 2018 and their 2024 tour of Colombia. A source familiar with the criticism of the duchess told Radar:
“Meghan's critics are sick of what they see as her constantly trying to channel Diana. Every time she wears something associated with Diana, they argue that it creates another comparison. The earrings immediately became a talking point because their history is so recognisable. But she needs to realise she is nowhere near as iconic as Diana and has nothing to do with her."
Meghan Markle wanted to be 'Princess Diana 2.0', claims childhood friend
Meghan Markle was often seen wearing Princess Diana’s belongings, and it has often garnered a lot of attention. In the book titled Meghan: A Hollywood Princess, Meghan’s childhood friend claimed that the former actress was “always fascinated by the royal family.” The friend is also quoted as saying Markle “wants to be Princess Diana 2.0.”
On August 4, 2026, Meghan Markle rang in her 45th birthday and commemorated the milestone by sharing fresh photos and footage from her celebration. She shared two photos of herself leaping into a swimming pool while holding a bouquet of balloons. Soon, the pool picture caught people’s attention. The snap was being compared to a nearly identical photo of Princess Diana, in the same jumping position.
Body language expert Rhiannon O'Donohoe has analysed the picture and revealed that Meghan’s snap looked pre-planned. As per O'Donohoe:
“There's every chance that Diana's propelling legs were an unusual, personal oddity, unique to her, and expressed her own indefatigable optimistic outlook, but it would be super unlikely that Megan copied it unintentionally. This must have been pre-planned. Their arms are very different in the two pics. While Diana's hands were flailing, showing her as a free spirit, happy to go with the flow, Meghan's are the opposite.”
