The manhunt for Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today Show anchor Savannah Guthrie, has been taking a more terrifying turn with every passing day. Amid the ongoing search involving more than 100 officials from the Pima County Sheriff's Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), multiple tips, angles, and potential leads are flooding in from all across the country.

Recently, a report left the internet shocked after claiming that officials have discovered an unidentified female's body resembling Nancy Guthrie. Here's what we know about the viral claim, and where the case really stands now.

Debunking the viral "body found" claim

A video clip has been circulating across discussion platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit for the past couple of days, where an alleged news piece claims that the officials have discovered an unidentified female's body in Pima County. The body allegedly shares similarities with Nancy Guthrie, including the descriptions of the clothes, which she was allegedly seen wearing before going missing. The post's caption reads:

"Body found in Pima county search shares similarities with missing Nancy Guthrie, ID pending."

However, the latest online rumour appears to stem from an AI-generated video posted by a non-credible account. Social media users quickly questioned its authenticity. One commenter wrote, “This sounds like AI.” Another added, “What’s really going on? The truth will come to light.” A third user raised a different concern: if the woman in the video isn’t Nancy, then who is she? The comment reads:

"If it isn’t her, who’s this woman? Did somebody kill this woman? No family called police about this woman found? God rest her soul."

The viral claim turns out to be just a typical example of how high-profile cases become susceptible to misinformation. With fake 'news' like this, AI-generated clips can look very convincing, especially when emotions are running high. But as of now, authorities have confirmed no discovery of a body linked to this case.

Who is the primary suspect in Nancy Guthrie's kidnapping case?

On Tuesday, February 10, 2026, the FBI released newly recovered images and a 44-second doorbell camera video showing a potential suspect outside Nancy Guthrie’s Catalina Foothills home in Tucson, Arizona. The footage captures a masked individual wearing gloves, a ski mask, and what appears to be a firearm holstered to his waist. Savannah Guthrie re-shared the images on social media, urging the public to help identify the man. Upon studying the footage, authorities have described the man as between 5 feet 9 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall, with an average build. He was seen carrying a black 25-liter “Ozark Trail Hiker Pack” backpack.

While many social media users pointed fingers toward Nancy's son-in-law, Annie Guthrie's husband, Tommaso Cioni, others noted that the height, a potential wrist tattoo, and facial features resembled Cioni's former Early Black bandmate and friend, Dominic Evans. It's important to note, however, that the FBI and the Pima County Sheriff's Department have not officially identified a suspect. Sheriff Chris Nanos, in fact, has said that the Guthrie siblings and Tommaso Cioni have been "100 per cent" supportive with the search and cross-questioning.

Where the investigation stands now

Nancy Guthrie, 84, was last seen in the evening of January 31, 2026, when her family members had dropped her off at her home in the Catalina Foothills near Tucson, Arizona. When the investigators came to an empty house the next morning, it looked like a crime scene, and now, evidence indicates she was abducted. Since February 1, the FBI says it has received more than 13,000 tips. A 24-hour command post remains active in the neighbourhood, staffed by agents and investigators reviewing every lead. The reward for information leading to Nancy’s location has been doubled to USD 100,000.

In the days after her disappearance, multiple ransom notes demanding millions of dollars in Bitcoin were reportedly sent to media outlets. Savannah Guthrie and her siblings publicly stated they were willing to pay a ransom if it meant their mother’s safe return. However, there has been no confirmation that any payment was made. Authorities have also not publicly confirmed whether the ransom communications are legitimate.

The DNA recovered from Nancy Guthrie’s property reportedly does not belong to her or anyone close to her. That DNA is now being tested for potential leads.
