Zeenat Aman was one of the superhit actresses of the golden era of the 70s in Bollywood. She was known for her ethereal beauty, charm and terrific acting mettle. Even today, she continues to shed her diva vibes, and at the age of 71, her personality and gorgeous self can give competition to any young actress. After making her social media debut recently, Zeenat has been treating her fans with many unseen photos and unheard anecdotes about her life, which has made their fans nostalgic all over again.
Being a top-of-the-league actress in a competitive field as films, Zeenat Aman has perhaps been the only one who has nailed it perfectly. For the unversed, in her golden career in the 70s, she has some amazing films in her kitty, including Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Don, Qurbani, Dostana, Lawaris among so many others. And now, in a recent interview with Vogue, Zeenat opened up on what had actually happened behind those glorious decades of her career, and revealed that it was themost suffocating environment back then. In her words:
“I didn't realise how much being able to publicly speak my own truths would delight me. As a leading actor in the '70s, I was always a subject of conversation, but almost never on my own terms. The gossip and perceptions could be suffocating, and there was rarely recourse to set the record straight. “

Going further in the interview, Zeenat opened up on making her social media debut on Instagram, at the age of 71. She mentioned that unlike her superhit career, which seldom gave her a chance to express herself freely, social media made her realise the freedom of making unapologetic perceptions, without the fear of getting judged. Moreover, she revealed that it was her son, Zahaan and his partner, Cara who had convinced her to join it. She mentioned:
“On Instagram, I have found the freedom to express myself. It's liberating, and consequently, I haven't accepted a single interview request that's come my way since February.”
In the concluding segment of the interview, Zeenat frankly revealed how the film industry has always been specific in highlighting how and in which manner they would like to see female actresses portrayed in the public eye. She also added how there is a specific way in which talent is measured in female artists, and also revealed how she had been thoroughly enjoying the process of challenging her ageing in many ways. In her words:
“Over the years, I've worn it all (and nearly bared it all) and had great fun doing it. I realised early on that the world desired youth and beauty from women in the film industry. So, I leveraged my looks, but I also chose roles that pushed the envelope. Still, there was far more interest in my face and figure than there ever was in my intellect. This is one reason that I have loved ageing—it has evened the scales.”

In an earlier interaction with Vogue India, Zeenat Aman spoke about her decision to take a sabbatical from the world of glamour, at a time when there was more expected from her. She revealed that after years of living the stardom, she wished to create a safe space for herself where she could be just herself. She added that it was the birth of her sons that had brought this much-needed change and break in her life, which she had always longed for.
