Priyanka Chopra talks about getting 'lightened up' in Bollywood films

After her historic win at the Miss World pageant in 2000, Priyanka Chopra made her Bollywood debut with the film, The Hero: Love Story of a Spy, in 2003. However, the actress faced colourism during her early years in the film industry, and in the same conversation, she opened up about being lightened in many movies. Priyanka added that things began to change with the arrival of social media as people started speaking up about harmful stereotypes of discrimination amongst Indians. In her words:

"When I joined the movie business, if you were fair, you were guaranteed some sort of success or casting, but if you were darker... and I'm not even that dark. For darker girls, it was like, well, let's lighten you up. I was lightened up in many movies. Through make-up and then blasting lighting. There was a song that I still remember. It was called ‘Chitti Dudh kudi’ which means a girl who is as white as milk and I ain’t that but I was playing her and I was really lightened up in the movie."

Priyanka Chopra recalls doing fairness cream ads due to her dusky complexion

Priyanka Chopra also shared that she was considered 'dusky' during the initial years of her acting career and admitted that she had done fairness creams commercials in the past. However, she soon realised the extremely 'damaging' effects of skin fairness ads that promoted the idea that young women would only have a better future if they had a fairer complexion and stopped doing them. She shared:

"I remember when I joined movies, I was considered dusky, written as the dusky actress and I was like ‘What is dusky? What does it mean?’. Yet, I did a commercial for a fairness cream, because you are doing a beauty brand. A beauty brand is a really big part of an actress’ trajectory. And all the beauty brands were selling those creams. We were taught that damaging bullsh*t. Even I got caught up into it and I look back on that, the commercial was so damaging. I'm darker skinned and this guy comes in, selling flowers, and he doesn't even look at me. I start using this cream, and I get a job, I get the guy and all my dreams come true. That was like the mid-2000s."

On the work front, Priyanka Chopra will be next seen in the web series, Citadel.
