Miss Universe is a prestigious beauty pageant, organised every year by Miss Universe Organisation. Beauties from all across the world participate and represent their country in it. However, the pageant requires the contestants to follow certain guidelines and fulfill the eligibility criteria to participate in it. Up until now, the organisation had the strict rule to only allow single and women with no children to enter the competition. Not only that, the winner had to remain that way till their serving period.
However, now with the changing world, a historical change is about to be brought in the Miss Universe pageant. A really inspiring decision has been taken by the organisers of the Miss Universe competition, to expand its eligibility criteria and allow mothers and married women to enter the competition. For the unversed, Harnaz Kaur Sandhu become the crown bearer after winning the Miss Universe title in 2021.

According to a report by Fox News, from the year 2023, marital and parental status will not be a limiting factor in the pageant. Reacting to this historic decision, Miss Universe 2020 winner, Andrea Meza of Mexico expressed her happiness. Applauding the decision, the former Miss Universe, in an interview with the Insider, said that she is happy that the pageant is now open for women with families. In her words:
"I honestly love that this is happening. Just like society changes and women are now occupying leadership positions where in the past only men could, it was about time pageants changed and opened up to women with families."
In the same interview, Andrea Meza called the present rules 'sexist' and 'unrealistic'. Pointing at the people who are against the decision, Andrea said:
"A few people are against these changes because they always wanted to see a single woman who is available for a relationship. They always wanted to see a woman that, from the outside, looks so perfect that she's almost unreachable. The former is sexist, and the latter is unrealistic."

For the unversed, Sushmita Sen was the first Indian to win the Miss Universe title in 1994. Later on, Lara Dutta brought the title home in 2000. And most recently, Harnaz Kaur Sandhu became the third Indian to win the Miss Universe title in 2021.
