Just days after reports surfaced that the couple had quietly separated following nearly three years of marriage, insiders have shed light on what allegedly led to the breakup.
Margaret Qualley reportedly 'initiated the separation'
In a recent interview with Us Weekly, an insider revealed that Qualley made the decision to separate after the couple spent years trying to work through ongoing issues. "It happened recently, but they have been having issues for the last few years. Margaret initiated the separation," a source told the outlet.
The insider claimed that the couple had to spend long periods apart due to their demanding work schedules and eventually developed a "lack of trust in the marriage." While there likely wasn't a particular incident that triggered the split, the piled-up issues over time contributed to the breakdown of their relationship.
The source added that both Qualley and Antonoff dealt with trust issues, which made maintaining a healthy marriage increasingly difficult. "They were still trying to work on the marriage a few months ago, but it ultimately wasn't working," the insider said. "At some point, the rose-colored glasses came off for Margaret, and she felt she needed to take a step back."
Another source told Page Six that the estranged couple had issues communicating their woes, adding that "Margaret didn’t always feel like her perspective was being heard or given the same weight."
Was infidelity a factor behind the split?
With multiple reports highlighting trust issues as a factor in the couple's estrangement, many began wondering whether infidelity had something to do with it. However, according to another insider's claim, the rumors making the rounds are "not true."
Speaking to Page Six days after Qualley and Antonoff's separation, a source noted that the split was not caused by infidelity, and instead, the former couple is handling the separation with "love and kindness" as they figure out their next steps together. The source noted:
"For what it’s worth, they’ve had a beautiful and loving relationship. Sometimes, these things just don’t work, and it doesn’t need to be for any dramatic reason."
Speculation about Margaret Qualley and Jack Antonoff's rocky relationship surfaced earlier this month after the latter attended Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's wedding alone at the MSG. Internet sleuths also noted that Qualley had quietly removed wedding photos from her social media, although it remains unclear when they disappeared.
The couple's last public appearance together was at the 2026 Grammy Awards in February. Antonoff, however, was later photographed still wearing his wedding ring after reports confirmed their separation. Despite the split, Us Weekly reported that the pair has not yet made plans to file for divorce.
Jack Antonoff and Margaret Qualley first sparked romance rumors in 2021 after they were spotted together in New York City. Their relationship moved quickly, with the couple confirming their engagement in May 2022 after Antonoff proposed. Just over a year later, in August 2023, they exchanged vows in an intimate ceremony in New Jersey, surrounded by close friends and family.
Earlier this year, Qualley also reflected on their relationship during a Vanity Fair interview. "I've always been very love-oriented," she said. "I've always been looking for my person, and I met Jack." However, in July 2026, speculations were rife that Jack and Margaret had seemingly parted ways.
Neither Qualley nor Antonoff has publicly commented on the status of their relationship.
