Since Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise's split, the Mission: Impossible star hardly met their daughter, leading to estrangement and reports of having "abandoned" Suri. At that time, Katie and a seven-to-eight-year-old Suri remained silent regarding the matter. After a few years, Katie appeared in an interview with Town & Country magazine where she opened up about her life as a single mom and the joys and difficulties of raising Suri while balancing her career as an actor.
Katie shared that kids drift apart from their parents over time, and it's a gradual process. She wanted to be with Suri for as long as she could but also knew that she had to let her go out there and find her own path. The thought of parting with her only child was "very very sad" and "heartbreaking" to her, but she noted that being "independent" was necessary for them.

Katie, who stayed with Suri all the time, felt a sense of detachment from her as she grew up. Thus, her daughter's estrangement from her father, Tom Cruise, who hardly met her since his divorce, wasn't a surprise. Sharing how sad it was to drift apart from their kids, Katie Holmes told the interviewer:
"Every day, kids get a little further away from you. That's a positive thing. They should be becoming more independent, but it's heartbreaking. You want them to stay with you forever, but they're these amazing beings, and you have to do everything you can to give them what they need-and then they're going to go. And that's going to be very, very sad for me."
Katie Holmes also stated that Suri Noelle was "the most important person" to her and that giving her a good future was what she was focused on. Amid Tom Cruise's absence from Suri's life, Katie tried her best to be there for their daughter and protect her "innocent childhood." Katie shared that it wasn't easy for her to balance her career and take care of her daughter at the same time. However, she felt blessed to get to live two roles she loved, i.e., being an actor and being Suri's mom. Katie said:
"This business is so unstable, and you never really know where you're going to be...My child is the most important person to me, and her upbringing is paramount to my work right now. It's very important that I'm present and she has a stable, innocent childhood. I feel so blessed to do what I do, but there's nothing in the world better than watching your child succeed."

As per July 27, 2026 reports, Suri Noelle has taken a major step to define her relationship with her father, Tom Cruise. She legally changed her last name to Noelle, dropping her famous Cruise surname. Tom Cruise has been publicly estranged from Suri for over a decade following his 2012 divorce from Katie Holmes.
Reports stated that the actor hadn't met his daughter in 11 years. Their last public appearance together was in April 2013, and according to multiple sources, it was Tom who chose not to see his estranged daughter at that time. In response, Suri chose to drop her father's last name and adopt her mother's middle name.
