For those who don't know, Tom and Suri’s relationship began declining after the Mission: Impossible star’s divorce from Katie in 2012, after a five-and-a-half-year marriage. Now, as per new reports, Suri is legally severing ties with Tom by dropping the Cruise last name. Amid this, fans have become curious to know if Tom Cruise had truly ‘abandoned’ his daughter when his marriage ended.
Tom Cruise opened up about the rumours that he had ‘abandoned' his daughter, Suri Cruise
After Tom Cruise split from his ex-wife, Katie Holmes, rumours were abuzz that he had ‘abandoned' their daughter, Suri Cruise. Several magazines and publications had also alleged the same. However, Tom Cruise soon shut them down and even went as far as to file a lawsuit against them, claiming that the publications had defamed him. He argued in a deposition:
"What I find most disturbing is that I have to sit here and look at this photograph of my daughter with ‘Abandoned by Daddy' (across it) - to me, that is what sticks out the most."
Reportedly, in addition to the “Abandoned by Daddy” line, a publication had also reported that Tom chose “Scientology over Suri for good.” Tom vehemently denied this statement too in his deposition. Tom said:
"I mean come on, that is absolutely disgusting. That is absolutely disgusting. And I have to tell you, with everything ... listen, I am a public person, I absolutely understand. For me there is ... I tolerate a tremendous amount, and I am very privileged to be able to have the life that I have, and I believe that."
The actor claimed that he has “in no way” cut his daughter, Suri, out of his life, especially considering she was only 7 years old at the time. Despite what Tom said, he and Suri have remained estranged for years. The father-daughter duo’s last public appearance came in April 2013, with multiple sources claiming that it was Tom’s decision to no longer see his daughter.
Suri Cruise drops Tom Cruise’s last name after several years of estrangement
It was on July 27, 2026, that reports began circulating about how Suri Cruise had taken a major step in how she wants her relationship with her estranged father, Tom Cruise, to appear. Dropping Tom’s surname, Cruise, Suri has now legally changed her last name to Noelle.
As per the reports, even her official voter registration records from her college’s address in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, show her new identity as Suri Noelle. This highlights the fact that the 20-year-old has already completed the necessary legal procedures to change her famous surname.
It is believed that Suri finalized the legal process in New York before she moved from there. Many might not be aware, but this is not the first time that Suri has used the surname Noelle. Previously, in her June 2024 high school graduation pamphlet at LaGuardia High School, she went by the name Suri Noelle. She has done the same for her professional ventures.
Coming to the reason behind why Suri decided on Noelle as her last name, it appears to be a homage to her mother, whose full name is Katie Noelle Holmes. Now that Suri has legally changed her surname, it is to be seen if she ever decides to reconcile with her father.
Notably, in a 2019 interview, sources had claimed that Tom “still loves” his daughter. They added that the actor “never intended to be estranged from his daughter when he decided to have a family with Katie and looks forward to repairing the relationship one day.”
