While Bollywood is frequently remembered for some of the most magical unions and lavish weddings, its flip side sometimes reveals the ugly underbelly of heartbreaks and divorces, followed by alimony fights and, worst of all, the battle for the custody of the child. One such case was the unhappy marriage of Karisma Kapoor with Sunjay Kapur, whose end was everything bitter.
Bollywood actress, Karisma Kapoor tied the knot with her industrialist beau, Sanjay Kapur, on September 29, 2003. It was an arranged marriage for the couple and nevertheless, the duo seemed like a perfect match made in heaven. The duo’s marriage was a lavish Sikh wedding at Karisma's ancestral house, Krishna Raj Bungalow, in Mumbai. The madly-in-love duo welcomed their first child, their daughter, Samiera, in 2005. Five years later, in 2010, the family got completed with the arrival of their son, Kiaan.

Quite unexpectedly, Karisma and Sunjay shocked their fans when they filed for mutual divorce in 2014. Nearly nobody thought of this coming, as the duo seemed like a perfect couple. Although their initial application for divorce was claimed to be mutual, things turned difficult when Karisma, during their divorce proceedings, alleged Sunjay for not complying with her for financial support.
Well, no argument is complete without hearing both sides. As soon as Karisma had levied charges of financial insufficiencies against Sunjay, he made some controversial allegations against the actress. According to his claims, Karisma had reportedly married him for the sake of his money and property. Such statements certainly made the divorce proceeding all the more controversial and started attracting the limelight from all over.

However, as soon as the matter started to blow out of proportion in the public eye, both ex-partners Karisma and Sunjay decided to arrive at a solution amicably rather than washing the dirty laundry in public. Soon after, both the law spokesperson of the ex-couple issued a joint statement on behalf of Karisma and Sunjay that the couple had decided to resolve the matter amicably in the Supreme Court as their terms for each other get settled. After that, the couple was finally granted divorce in 2014.
After their formal divorce, the next thing in line with the question was the alimony Sunjay gave Karisma. Reportedly, this also went through many discussions and debates between the ex-couple, and finally Karisma was granted a hefty alimony. A report then published by Mid-Day mentioned that apart from all the jewellery Karisma had received at her wedding, Sunjay had also provided his father’s property in the name of alimony. According to the report:
"Karisma will get Sunjay's father's house (in Khar) transferred in her name. Sunjay has to purchase bonds worth Rs 14 crore for the children, which will attract a monthly interest of around Rs 10 lakh."
One of the most tragic parts of their divorce was when the couple even dragged their kids, Samiera and Kiaan, to the court and involved them in an ugly custody battle. It had been reported by many tabloids back then about the heated arguments between Karisma and Sunjay about the custody of their children. Lastly, Karisma won the custody battle and left Sunjay responsible for bearing all the children's expenses. Moreover, the court also granted equal stay and visiting rights of the children to their father as well. According to a report in Spotboye, the custodian rights given to Sunjay included the following:
"They can spend at least two-three months in a year with him if you add up all the days that he has been permitted."
Fast forward to this day, Sunjay and Karisma lead entirely different lives altogether. While Karisma is a proud single mom of her kids, Sunjay, on the other hand, is married a second time to his girlfriend, Priya Sachdev. However, the ex-couple continue to co-parent mutually for the sake of their children.
