Influencer Bride Recalls Getting Body Shamed At Tarun Tahiliani's Store, The Ace-Designer Apologises

It is common for the double standards of society to expect a plus-size girl to go on dieting and shed those extra kilos before her wedding. Succumbing to the pressures of society, there are a lot of girls, who resort to crash diets, slimming teas and what not before their D-day. Though these stereotypes in society are prevalent for long, it is not really acceptable if one gets body-shamed while relying on their favourite designer for their dream wedding outfit.

Influencer and gynaecologist bride, Tanya Narendra is clearly against this thought process of the society that demands a girl to torture herself rather than enjoying one of the most beautiful times of her life. However, what had disappointed her the most was the fact that she was body-shamed at her dream designer, Tarun Tahiliani's store.

Dr Tanya Narendra took to her IG handle to share how everyone expects a plus-size girl to go through massive dieting and stated that she also had to go through the same. Reinstating her experience, Tanya wrote, "There is SO much pressure on people to lose weight before their wedding - I had that too. Family friends would ask why I wasn’t “dieting” before my wedding (in a span of one month lmao). Some even went out of their way to send me “slimming teas”."

Going further in her post, Tanya revealed that she was body-shamed at ace-designer, Tarun Tahiliani's store, Ambawatta. In her post, she also shared that she regrets her childhood dream of wearing his design on her D-Day. Stating the same, the bride wrote, "Bridal stores would body shame (looking at you, Ambawatta @taruntahiliani {yeah, that was a massive shame, because I’d wanted to wear a Tarun T to my wedding since I was 12. Never going there again. [also what’s with these big designers being afraid of big boobs?"

Tanya further praised the staff members at Anita Dongre's store and thanked them for stitching her the perfect outfit for her wedding. She wrote, "I cannot sing enough praises for the guys at @anitadongre, who managed to make a beautifully fitting, and genuinely lovely lehenga, all in a span of three weeks!]}) and all kinds of weird comments were thrown at me about my “double chin” and “belly showing in the lehenga haww”. But you know what? F*ck that. F*ck all that. Look at me, how happy I am. Double chin and all. Just look at me."

Tanya concluded her post with an important lesson for all the plus-size brides in particular and every girl in general that self-love is very much important. Her concluding note can be read as "And that’s all that matters - my closest friends, my lovely family, and my boy love me for who I am. And most importantly, I love me for who I am. And that’s the biggest learning I can share from my wedding. Enjoy it, because happy brides are the best brides."

Reacting to the explosive post made by Dr Tanya Narendra, the ace-designer, Tarun Tahiliani took to his IG handle to clarify his stand and shared a statement on the same. He shared that the bride's size (16) was not available at the store and owing to their exceptionally good quality standards, they could not restock it within three weeks. Therefore, they had to tell Tanya that they could not meet her needs within the given timeline. His statement also stated that his house has curated designs for clients across different ages, ethnicities, genders and nationalities. However, body shaming has never been a word in their vocabulary.

The designer's story

In another IG story, Tarun Tahiliani apologised to Dr Tanya Narendra as there was some misunderstanding. He also shared his team's inability to get a reply from Tanya on reaching out to her. He apologised to all his clients if their communication of stock availability, timelines needed for production and customisation had ever disappointed them. Tahiliani further claimed to “look beyond shape and size” and strive for diversity. Thereby, sharing his secret of surviving for more than 25 years, he said that they serve women with diverse body types.

Tarun's post

Resharing Tarun Tahilian's post on her IG stories, Tanya shared that she had mailed his team prior to her visit, but she was not informed about any stock availability issue. She has also shared screenshots of the same. In another story, she also slammed the designer for violating her privacy by disclosing her size on social media. Lastly, Tanya made it clear that her post was not to defame the designer but to share the experiences that a chubby bride goes through before her wedding.
