The talks about ‘good friendship’ between India and Canada are in the past now, courtesy of the death of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The political commentary from both sides has raised concerns over the trade and economic partnership agreements that Canada and India have signed in recent years. The public statement by the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, on the Sikh protests in his country has ignited a fire. Soon, the Indian government suspended all Canadian visa applications until further notice.
Not only this, the Indian government also told Indian citizens, who are living in Canada that the country is ‘unsafe’ for them, which clearly shows that the row between the two countries has hit rock bottom. The tension between India and Canada isn’t a result entirely based on the demise of Canadian Sikh separatist leader, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, as there are numerous instances in the past, which disrupted the peace between these two nations.
For instance, back in December 2020, when the farmers' protests were leading all the headlines in India, it was Canada, who gave a not-so-impressive reaction to it. The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau stated in a press conference that “Canada will always be there to defend the right of peaceful protestors”, which was enough to sour the bond between the two nations.
However, this time, things have gone way too far, which is why people are bringing up the names of famous celebrities who have Canadian citizenship but are working and earning in India.
