Bollywood is not just about films, it's about the brewing romance between celebrities. While some find their soulmate, others remain heartbroken after an ugly breakup. Being true Bollywood buffs, we sometimes find it difficult to accept the separation of our favourite stars. It hurts to see the longtime sweethearts fall apart and call it quits without giving a second thought to their relationship.
Here we bring you a list of famous celebrities, from Sushant Singh Rajput-Ankita Lokhande to Deepika Padukone-Ranbir Kapoor, who had dated each other for longer periods and gave major relationship goals. But, their ugly breakups left the entire media and their massive fanbase in utter shock. Check out!
Television couple, Ankita Lokhande and the late actor, Sushant Singh Rajput fell in love with each other during the shoot of the popular daily soap, Pavitra Rishta. Their cute and magical on-screen chemistry was hailed by many, and when the news of them dating in real life came into the media, their fans were the happiest. However, after dating for 6 long years, Sushant and Ankita called it quits in 2016. By that time, Sushant had already made a big name for himself in Bollywood with movies like Kai Po Che, Shuddh Desi Romance and PK. Meanwhile, Ankita, who was devastated by the separation but did not want a tamasha about her relationship, had decided to suffer in silence after her breakup for years.
In an unfortunate turn of events, Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead at his Mumbai apartment on June 14, 2020. After a thorough investigation, the media had suspected his girlfriend, Rhea Chakroborty, and the case is still on the files. However, Ankita happily moved on and married a businessman, Vicky Jain.
The chocolate boy of Bollywood, Shahid was madly in love with Bebo. Their romantic relationship was very much public after they had started dating in 2004 on the sets of their film, Fida. Their relationship was the talk of the town, and everyone was hoping for them to get married soon. However, after dating for a while, things went south, and both of them parted ways in 2007 while shooting for their film, Jab We Met. According to a few reports, the reason behind their breakup was Kareena Kapoor’s mother, Babita Kapoor and her sister, Karisma Kapoor. They were against Bebo and Shahid’s relationship and had advised them to break ties.
After that, Kareena Kapoor dated her Tashan co-star, Saif Ali Khan, and married the once-married man on October 16, 2012. On the other hand, Shahid Kapoor had stunned everyone by doing an arranged marriage with a Delhi-based girl, Mira Rajput Kapoor.
The handsome hunk of B-Town, John Abraham and the Bengali beauty, Bipasha Basu were the ‘IT’ couple of Bollywood. They had dated for decades, and their separation news had come as a shocker for millions. Even though both of them had stated different reasons behind their breakup in the media, it was John’s reluctance to commit that ended their beautiful relationship.
Soon, Bipasha had fallen for her Alone co-star, Karan Singh Grover, who was already heartbroken due to two failed marriages in the past. They became each other’s forever on April 30, 2016, and have been living happily together. On the other hand, John Abraham married his and Bipasha's mutual friend, Priya Runchal. Multiple reports suggest that John was romantically involved with Priya even before breaking up with Bipasha.
Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor were the most loved couple in Tinseltown. They had worked together into the film, Bachna Ae Haseeno, and soon, news of their dating had started to make its way into juicy tabloids. Deepika even got a tattoo of RK on the nape of her neck to profess her love for Ranbir. However, the couple had to call it quits due to Ranbir’s apparent cheating. In an interview with the Verve magazine in 2010, Deepika opened up about her relationship and revealed how Ranbir was an unfaithful partner. She had said:
“For me, sex is not just about physicality; there are emotions involved. I have never cheated or strayed when I’m in a relationship. If I’m going to be fooling around, why would I be in a relationship? It’s better to be single and have fun. But not everyone thinks like that. Maybe that’s why I’ve been hurt in the past. The first time he cheated on me, I thought there was something wrong with the relationship, or me. But when someone makes a habit of it, you know the problem lies with him.”
They both are currently friends and have shared the screen in many movies without showing any hard feelings towards each other. Deepika is married to the love of her life, Ranveer Singh, and on the other hand, Ranbir has tied the knot with his longtime girlfriend, Alia Bhatt.

One of the hottest couples on television, Upen and Karishma were all over the headlines for their mushy romance. They had also participated in Nach Baliye 7 as a couple and had ended up as the finalists in the show. While their fans and well-wishers had wanted them to get hitched, they had broken hearts by breaking up in 2016. In an interview with ETimes, Karishma revealed the real reason behind her split with Upen and had stated:
"Sometimes there is no answer to what went wrong. Sometimes two wonderful people or good souls are not meant be together. That's what happened to us. He (Upen) is a wonderful soul. We connected very strongly, but things didn't move the way we wanted it to. It's not that I don't want to settle down or I am jumping from one relationship to another. We both wanted to settle down, but if we don't see our future together than it's better to part ways.”
Now, Karishma Tanna is happily married to her real-estate businessman boyfriend, Varun Bangera.

According to a report in the Hindustan Times, Kushal had told his journalist friend that the reason behind their breakup was religion, as Gauahar had wanted him to convert from Hindu to Muslim. Karisma would often get spotted with the Bachchans at events, and Jaya would adorably address her as their to-be-bahu. But things went south, and the couple called off their engagement.
Reports suggest that Karisma’s mother, Babita Kapoor was the reason behind her broken engagement with Abhishek. At that time, the Bachchans were going through a debt of Rs. 90 crore due to a failed production house. Moreover, Babita was not too sure about Abhishek’s career in Bollywood. Fast forward to now, Abhishek is happily married to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. On the other hand, Karisma divorced Sunjay Kapur after accusing him of cheating and harassment.

Soon after the news broke out, Govinda’s extramarital affair was published on the front page of the tabloids. His wife, Sunita Ahuja was also shocked to the core and had allegedly left his house. But over the years, Govinda formed a concrete bond with Sunita and maintained a healthy married life. Similarly, Rani found love in the arms of Aditya Chopra.
Raveena Tandon was men's ultimate fantasy in the 90s, and Akshay Kumar was the action hero in Bollywood. And when the two Punjabis started dating in the early 90s, fans were gaga over their bond. Raveena had even stopped signing films as Akshay wanted her to be a housewife. They were engaged but never tied the knot. In an old interview, Raveena had said:
“No, there was a very elaborate engagement ceremony. With the pandit doing pooja and everything. His family had flown down from Delhi, my family came from Delhi. One of his elders had put a red dupatta on my head, and I think that was mistaken to be a wedding."
However, reports of Akshay Kumar being disloyal to Raveena were always rife in the media. He had even kept the news of his engagement hidden for a long time because of the fear of losing stardom and female fans. Later, Akshay allegedly cheated on Raveena with her best friend, Shilpa Shetty. After getting betrayed, Raveena found love in millionaire, Anil Thadani.
