Mississippi Mayor Spoke About 'Lowering U.S. Flag' After Dolly Parton's Death At 80, Sparking Debate

It was after Dolly's death that her team disclosed that the singer was dealing with cancer. Recently, Dolly Parton's sister took to her social media handle and paid respect to the country legend. The tribute came at the same time as a debate sparked by Mississippi Mayor Ken Adams' comment about a gesture made to the late country music legend. So, let's have a look at what actually happened.
What is the flag-lowering debate after Dolly Parton's demise?
Following Dolly Parton's death, the White House decided to lower all the American flags to half-mast to pay tribute to the singer. However, Mayor Ken Adams of Olive Branch, a suburb of Memphis, Tennessee, disagrees with this. In a Facebook post, the mayor revealed that he wanted to clarify that he had nothing but respect for Dolly Parton and for the way her art brought happiness to millions of people; however, his concern is different.
According to the mayor, lowering the American flag should mean something different and be reserved for 'military heroes, fallen first responders, presidents and other major national leaders, or events that have had a tremendous impact on our country'. Speaking more about the same, mayor Ken Adams, in the post, wrote:
"I have nothing but respect for her. My concern is different. I believe lowering the American flag to half-staff should mean something very significant. In my opinion, it should be reserved for our military heroes, fallen first responders, presidents and other major national leaders, or events that have had a tremendous impact on our country.”
The post has been grabbing attention ever since it was posted, and the mayor of Olive Branch is facing backlash for the same. Speaking to the same, the mayor further mentioned that the President can make decisions for the country, while it's the Governor who makes decisions for the state of Mississippi. He also stated that nothing he said was political or disrespectful towards the singer; rather, it was his own belief. To quote Ken Adams:
"It isn’t about politics, and it certainly isn’t about saying she wasn’t a great American,” he said. “It’s simply my belief that the American flag at half-staff is one of the highest honors we can give, and I believe that honor should be reserved for truly extraordinary circumstances. Sometimes preserving the meaning of an honor means being selective about when we use it."
Dolly Parton's sister, Freida's heart-touching tribute
Dolly Parton was laid to rest and, according to her wish, she was buried in a cotton dress and her signature stilettos. Following this, Dolly's sister, Freida, took to her social media handles and paid a heart-touching tribute to the singer. Dolly was the 4th among her 11 siblings. While in 2021 she lost one of her brothers to cancer, it was only in July 2026 that her older brother also passed away, making the singer's death even more profound for the family.
In the tribute, Freida mentioned that while her sister was a superstar for the world, to her she was her 'Dolly Momma'. She revealed how Dolly raised her when she was 13 years old, and that continued until she was 18. Freida stated that she and her sister had their fair share of arguments, but love remained the same. Sharing that there will be no one like Dolly Parton, Freida penned:
“I asked you all months ago to pray for Dolly, but now I’m going to ask you to please pray for me and my entire family as we navigate this insurmountable loss. There will never be anyone who can replace her in our hearts, and I know she holds a special place in many of yours as well.”
