After his death, attention has shifted to his one true family, i.e., his sister, Darline Graham Nordone, especially as Trump urged South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster to appoint her as interim senator.
While it is not yet confirmed whether Darline will take on her late brother's role full-time, she is prepared to carry forward Lindsey's legacy. Amid this, the siblings' tragic past has resurfaced, along with the extraordinary bond they shared.
Darline Graham said she was "scared to death" after losing both parents
Lindsey Graham and Darline Graham Nordone grew up in Central, South Carolina, where their parents ran the Sanitary Cafe, a combination restaurant, bar and pool hall. Their lives changed forever when their mother died of cancer in 1976. Just 15 months later, their father died of a heart attack, leaving 22-year-old Lindsey and 13-year-old Darline orphaned.
Recalling that devastating day years later, Darline admitted she was overwhelmed with fear. "I can remember the day my father passed away, standing in the living room of that house, absolutely scared to death," she said during Lindsey Graham's 2015 presidential campaign launch.
She remembered her older brother immediately embracing her and making a promise that would shape the rest of their lives. She recalled, "He was like, 'I am so sorry, but it's going to be OK. I'm going to take care of you.'"

An emotional Darline beamed as she recalled how her brother became her legal guardian after she was orphaned. She shared, "He always made me feel so loved and so secure. Lindsey also made sure I finished high school, went to college. He even legally adopted me."
"Lindsey was always my parent"
After suffering back-to-back tragedies within less than two years, a teen Darline was left with no hope. Lindsey, also orphaned, didn't let the grief consume him. Instead, he stepped up, determined to ensure that his little sister had a happy and fulfilling life.
After losing her parents, Darline initially stayed with relatives while Lindsey completed his studies at the University of South Carolina. Without fail, he would travel home regularly to care for her. After joining the U.S. Air Force, he became her legal guardian, allowing her to receive military benefits and ensuring she could continue her education.
Looking back on those years, Darline said her brother filled every parental role imaginable. She shared, "Lindsey was always my parent. There was no doubt in my mind or anyone else's mind that Lindsey was my guardian." In another interview, she described him as "kind of like a brother, a father and a mother rolled into one."

The demanding responsibility also shaped Graham's personal life. Darline believed his decision to devote his early adulthood to raising her left little room for marriage or starting a family of his own. She explained:
"He was a young man taking on a young girl and teenager to raise. He was just dedicating all of that time to raising me and going to school and trying to get an education."
Lindsey Graham called raising Darline the greatest achievement of his life
While Lindsey Graham built a decades-long political career, he repeatedly said that his proudest accomplishment had nothing to do with public office, but his daughter-like sister, for whom he opted against marriage or having kids of his own. During a 2015 C-SPAN interview, the late senator said:
"Of all the things that have happened in my life, her [Darline] turning out so well is the highlight of it by far."
Darline went on to become a mother of two and worked helping people with disabilities find employment. Graham often pointed to her success as the achievement that mattered most to him.
The siblings remained exceptionally close throughout his political career. Darline introduced him when he launched his 2015 presidential campaign and frequently appeared beside him at major events. Graham even joked during his White House bid that if he ever needed a First Lady, his sister could fill the role.

Following his death, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster appointed Darline Graham Nordone as the state's interim U.S. senator, calling it a fitting tribute to the brother who spent decades taking care of her. Accepting the appointment, Darline echoed the promise that had defined their relationship for nearly five decades.
"Lindsey has always been there for me," she said. "And now, I will be there for him."
