The news of his demise was first shared by the politician’s official X (formerly Twitter) page. Amid this, Lindsey’s sister, Darline Graham, is hogging the spotlight after President Donald Trump advised South Carolina’s governor to appoint her to fill the late lawmaker’s seat.
Who is Darline Graham Nordone?
Darline Graham Nordone and Lindsey Graham reportedly shared a very close bond. After their parents died within the span of 15 months, the responsibility of assuming the role of Darline’s legal guardian fell on her brother when he was still in his early twenties.
For those unaware, at present, Governor Henry McMaster has the authority to appoint a temporary successor to occupy Lindsey's now-empty seat. If Darline were to take his place, she would get to serve at least until January 2027, when her brother's term will come to an end. However, because Lindsey was previously seeking reelection before his passing, it will initiate a rapid primary election to find his replacement on the upcoming November ballot.
Lindsey and Darline's bond was evidenced by the fact that the former never married or had any children, making his sister his closest family member. The duo was raised in Central, South Carolina. Here, their parents, Millie and F.J. Graham, ran the Sanitary Cafe, which served as a restaurant, bar and pool hall. Together, the family lived a modest life. As per reports, they used to live in a room located behind the establishment.
The duo’s mother died of Hodgkin's lymphoma in 1976. At the time, Lindsey was 20 years old while Darline was 11. About 15 months following their mother's death, the siblings lost their father to a heart attack. Ultimately, Lindsey decided to adopt Darline when she was 13, and he was 22 years old.
Reports suggest that Lindsey adopted her after he enlisted in the Air Force. This gave Darline access to several military benefits. Becoming her legal guardian, Lindsey had played an important role in Darline’s upbringing.
Sticking close to each other as adults, Darline has joined Lindsey Graham during several events for his 2015 presidential campaign. In an interview, she admitted that her brother was the person she always saw as her parent.
Coming to her personal life, Darline Graham Nordone is married to Larry Nordone. The duo shares two children together. Over the years, Darline has been dedicated to assisting people with disabilities in securing employment. She has also supported her brother in his extensive political career.
How did Lindsey Graham die?
Lindsey Graham’s preliminary cause of death was revealed to be aortic dissection. On the day of his death, Lindsey had reportedly faced severe chest pain after which a 911 call was made about a 70-something male facing a cardiac arrest where he lived. While they did not mention Lindsey's name on the call, the descriptions led many to believe that it was none other than the US senator.
As per the phone call, the person calling could be heard asking for forced entry into the ailing person’s house. This suggested that Lindsey might have been alone in the moments leading up to his death. Eventually, the responders arrived on location and wheeled him out on a gurney. It has not been revealed whether he was already deceased by the time he got medical help.
