Love isn't planned; it just happens. And what can be best than music to be a bridge between the two lovers? Music can heal pain as well as it can bring two people close. Music works like magic, and that glimpse of magic can be seen in this couple's love story. This week's real couple, Anupam Roy and Piya Chakraborty hail from Kolkata; one is a Presidency student, while the other is from Jadavpur University.
Anupam Roy, who rose to fame with Bengali songs like Amake Amar Moto Thakte Dao (Let Me Be Myself), Bawshonto Ese Geche (Spring Has Arrived), Ekhon Onek Raat (It's Too Late At Night), Bondhu Chol (Friends Let's Go), and many more, stepped into Bollywood too with his melodies. He took Bollywood with a storm with his soulful album in the film, Piku. Let's find out how did the couple meet? How did they click, and how their friendship turned to love to ringing wedding bells? Well, according to the media, their love blossomed through Anupam's music.
Celebrated singer, songwriter, and composer, Anupam Roy and his then-girlfriend, now wife, Piya Chakraborty, knew each other for years or as the singer had said that he feels like he knows her, "forever and ever". Piya Chakraborty was a PhD student of Anthropology and used to reside in Delhi. In one of the interviews with The Times of India, the Tollywood composer had mentioned:
"She comes from Presidency University and I am from Jadavpur University. For me, it's more of JU meeting Presi."
In another interview with The Times of India, Piya Chakraborty had said:
“From being complete strangers to acquaintances to friends -it has been a fluid relationship. I met him one spring in the heart of the city, amidst a lot of hustle-bustle. We are both nerdy people, wearing glasses... What brought us together, amidst other things, was our love for Chandrabindoo (a Bengali band)."
In one of the interviews with The Telegraph, Piya and Anupam had revealed that Anupam's music and songs have played a major role in their journey. Anupam has admitted many times that he writes his songs keeping his wife in mind. The male version of the song, Bawshonto Ese Geche (Spring has arrived) from the film, Chotushkone has lines that suggest their first meeting.
As Piya had said in the interview:
"The lines ‘Ei bawshonte koyek bochhor aage/ Tomay prothom dekhechhilam aami/ Hetechhilam bhutta mather pothe/ Shei bawshonto ekhon bhishon dami…’ (This spring of a few years ago, I saw you for the first time. We walked through the cornfield roads, that spring is too precious for me), talk about our first meeting. Of course, no one knows the significance of bhutta mather poth. Just translate it. It means Cornfield Road (laughs out loud). So this was our private joke till now... everyone thought of it as a poetic thing. It throws up a nice imagery. I feel it is one of his best songs and it’s one of my faves."
Piya had mentioned a song that her husband Anupam Roy wrote as a letter for her:
"Ure Jaak (Fly Away) is basically his first letter to me in the form of a song. He wrote the song keeping me in mind nearly seven-eight years ago when we used to exchange emails. He had sent me both the lyrics and the mp3 version of the song. I was quite overwhelmed when I first heard the song. I wouldn’t like to say anything more about the song since it speaks for itself."
She had mentioned another song in that interview, Tarar Moto (Like Stars), from one of Anupam's albums, that depicted their relationship.
"A few lines in the song ring true, and it could accurately predict something. ‘Bhebe dekho onnyo shohor, kingba porer bochhor, buker bhetore ekhono ekhono jhor...’ (Think about different cities, or next year, there's still storm inside my heart). We live in different cities now, and now I ask him how did he know about this."
In front of the media, Anupam had confided about his relationship after posting a picture with Piya on his Facebook profile. He had said:
"It was a joint decision to come clean on my status, that I'm with someone and am happy. I didn't expect people to notice it! For the first time in my life, I was happy to post a picture with the girl I love!"
Ever since he had come clean with his relationship, his fans and admirers had gone crazy to know when the marriage was going to happen. Finally, the wedding date was fixed.
So, the singer, Anupam Roy, and his then-girlfriend, now wife, Piya Chakraborty, decided on a date to tie their marital knot. On December 6, 2015, the couple was announced as Mr and Mrs in front of their close friends and families. It was a close-knit affair and they never hyped their marriage. Piya had looked beautiful in a red Banarasi sari and had paired it with gold jewellery set with a choker and two neckpieces, a pair of earrings and a mang teeka.
Anupam Roy and his wife, Piya's Instagram profile is filled with their adorable pictures. It's been 5 years since their marriage and they have been living happily ever after. Both Anupam and Piya spend time together with their friends and families, celebrate their special days in special ways and the love can be seen afar. We wish this couple a 'forever'!
On the work front, Anupam Roy is composing the music score for the Bollywood film, Bob Biswas starring Abhishek Bachchan. And, now, Piya who has been a Rabindrasangeet student, is coming with new IndieBengali music.
