Battle of Saraighat became the defining moment for Lachit Borphukan

For the unversed, during Lachit's time, the Mughal Empire was at the height of its power under Aurangzeb. After years of conflict, a large Mughal force under Raja Ram Singh was sent to bring Assam under imperial control. The Ahom Kingdom was facing an opponent with greater resources, manpower, and prestige. Yet at Saraighat, Lachit Borphukan understood something crucial: the Mughals could not fully exploit their strengths on the Brahmaputra. A Redditor had revealed:

"Instead of fighting on Mughal terms, he forced them into a battle where river warfare, local knowledge, and mobility mattered more than sheer numbers. According to Assamese chronicles, when the Ahom forces began to lose heart during the decisive phase of the battle, the seriously ill Lachit Borphukan personally entered the river on a war boat and rallied his men."

Netizens react to Aditya Dhar reportedly being asked to make a biopic on Lachit Borphukan

The CM of Assam had earlier lauded Aditya Dhar's movie Dhurandhar, calling it a big hit and saying he is among the best-known names among his contemporaries. Lachit Borphukan needs to be known globally, according to the CM, and if Dhar makes it, it will be a great achievement.

A Redditor reacted by saying, "Very risky to do it.. We tend to complain when others try to perform the Bihu dance and cannot do it flawlessly. We always complain. And we will complain about this as well. I'm right there with you on this. Why can’t we be appreciative instead of complaining? We don’t have to gatekeep our history or culture. If someone wants to tell the story of one of our greatest heroes with sincerity and respect, I'm all for it. Let’s judge the film by the final product, y’all."

Another user commented, "They can't portray it as we know it. It should have been given to someone from the Northeast; marketing could have been done by others... Directors like Rima Das, Jahnu Barua even Suvrat and Sasanka Samir... Or mix of all of them. Lachit Borphukon will be played by some Punjabi/UP actor, and Ahom culture will be "sanskritised" and will play into ruling govt propaganda. Nalage."

A third user penned, "With the lack of mainstream sources on Assamese history and the indolence of Bollywood when it comes to doing research, the film would be a risky project! Given that Mr Dhar is coming off his biggest success, it seems highly unlikely that he would make the effort of making it historically accurate"
