The hip-hop community is mourning the loss of Billy Plummer, better known as DJ Bigga Rankin. He was one of the most influential Florida-based DJs. The 50-year-old was also a promoter, and music executive. Billy was best known for helping launch the careers of many rap stars. He died on July 20, 2026, at the age of 50. Although his family confirmed his death, they have not revealed the exact cause of his death. In turn, it has left fans searching for answers.

Who was DJ Bigga Rankin? 

Bigga Plummer, better known as DJ Bigga Rankin, was a popular Southern hip-hop star. He had a long career that spanned more than three decades. It mainly focused on finding and promoting the emerging artists. This was long before those young artists would reach mainstream success.

Eventually, Billy's work shaped the careers of rappers such as Rick Ross, T I., Gucci Mane, Jeezy, Yo Gotti, Chainz, and more. Later, he began to build his name in Jacksonville, Florida, during the 1990s 

At the same time, Billy ran the nightclub Cool Runnings and became an important figure in the region's growing hip-hop scene. In fact, many artists who later became stars received early support through his mixtapes, live events, and industry connections.

Apart from promoting music, Bigga Rankin also held important roles in the industry. He served as a senior A&R executive at Think It's a Game Records and was a Vice president of the Hittmenn DJ coalition. 

Some friends and fellow artists of Bigga used to describe him as someone who willingly mentored new musicians and opened the doors for independent talent. Especially in some of his recent interviews, Billy reflected on the values that guided his career. He explained that he helped people without expecting anything in return because it was something taught to him by his mom.

Although DJ Bigga Rankin remained active in the music industry until his death, he used to speak publicly about his serious health challenges. 

After a major battle with COVID-19, he shared that he lost a kidney and underwent dialysis treatment. In fact, it used to happen thrice a week. But despite these struggles, Billy continued to work, attended events, and supported new artists across the country. 

Billy often shared how he used to depend on faith to keep him going. In fact, he was deeply committed to promoting music and mentored upcoming performers.

Meanwhile, just a few weeks before his death, he reflected on his long career in an interview. Billy explained that he was proud of the impact he had made on Jacksonville and the wider hip-hop community. Needless to say, his comments from the interview quickly went viral after his death.

DJ Bigga Rankin's family recently confirmed his death through a statement. They shared it on his official Instagram page on July 20, 2026. In their words:

"It is with great sadness that we announce that the patriarch of our family, Billy' Bigga Rankin' Plummer, passed away earlier this morning".

Billy's family has asked for privacy as they grieve his death. Meanwhile, they shared that the funeral arrangements and details of a celebration of life would be shared later. However, no official cause of his death was included in his announcement. 

On the other hand, Billy's longtime colleague Wendy Day described his death as "a sad day for hip hop" and recalled him as a father, husband, friend, and industry legend. She called him "one of one" and praised his generosity.
