Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst met on the set of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man in 2001, while filming what would become one of the biggest superhero movies of the 2000s. They played Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson, and the on-screen chemistry was impossible to miss, especially in the now-iconic upside-down rain kiss. That chemistry carried off-camera too.
Director Sam Raimi later confirmed in a 2007 interview that the two started dating in the middle of the first film. However, Sam was unaware of their romance during that time. The duo maintained privacy in their relationship, with reports claiming that it lasted between 2001 and 2002.
By the time cameras rolled for Spider-Man 2 in 2004, they had already split. In March 2002, an insider claimed that the former couple separated a “little more than a month ago.” The source also stated:
“It wasn’t anything in particular that happened. They’ll probably remain friends.”
Although they separated, they continued playing love interests in the next two instalments of Spider-Man, released in 2004 and 2007. Raimi admitted he was nervous about working with an ex-couple on such a high-stakes sequel. Sam said he was worried if the same chemistry would appear on screen once again. However, things did not go wrong, as Sam stated:
“They really like each other, I think, very much. And that relationship probably just added to their ability to trust each other.”
There were no reports of any drama or a public falling out between Toby and Kirsten. But sources framed it as an amicable breakup, saying that two young actors grew close on set, then drifted apart. James Franco, who played 'Harry Osborn,' later said in an interview that he had a crush on Kirsten at the time and believed that Tobey was “mad” at him. But things were fine between them by the time they joined each other on the set of Spider-Man 2.
After their amicable split in 2002, both Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst got romantically linked to someone else. Maguire started dating jewelry designer Jennifer Meyer in 2003. They got engaged in April 2006.
Tobey and Jennifer exchanged vows in September 2007 in Hawaii. The duo welcomed a son in May 2009. Notably, they had a daughter in 2006, a year before they got married. The former couple announced their separation in October 2016, and their divorce was finalised in 2020.
